It will kill a deer. My cousin killed his first with one when we were 7-8 yrs old. I don’t know that I ever shot it. Can’t imagine it’d kick much more than a 22 mag.

I have a friend who just inherited a Sako .222 Magnum. Is this the same round? And if so, how much are you asking?

My dad has a couple .222’s and it’s his favorite round. I’ll take them off your hands.

Definitely NOT the same cartridge. Similar comparison of the .22 Long Rifle and .22 Magnum. One has more powder capacity to increase velocity and ft/lbs of energy
.222 - .223 - .222 Rem Mag

As usual, Got Blaze delivered the needed details.
If you want a 222 Rem, buy it as it's certainly a fine varmint gun. OTOH, you'll prolly have a hard time finding it. Another option would be to sell the ammo on an auction site or classified ads site.
I've never had a 222 Rem, but I remember on vividly. I went to a gun show in S'port, not looking for anything in particular. I came across a Remington M700 BDL (the ones w/ nice wood and a floor plate) w/ a heavy barrel, nice rings/base and a 12X Leupold scope for $450. This was prob 25 yrs ago. I didn't buy it because I really didn't "need it" and I was beginning to do all my hunting w/ long barreled single shot handguns. I've regretted that ever since.

But you're right, it may be difficult to find a good rifle for a decent price.

Had a 222 40 yrs ago - it was a ground hog killing machine. As others have pointed out its a flat shooting laser .... For ground hogs a 22 LR is adequate but you can wound one and it crawls in the hole, w/ the 222 there was no wounding, lots of power and shock w/ the round and any hit was fatal. Could easily shoot out to 200 yds

One option would be to buy a TC encore frame. you could get a 222 pistol or rifle barrel for it from several different barrel makers.

What is your budget ? Search the i-net (gunbroker and gunsamerica) and buy a Savage M340 $300 . Or you can spend $1000+ on the following rifles. 222's seem to be more of a collectors cartridge as they definitely have a following of people who will pay premium dollar. A basic Savage will likely be the best investment for a rifle to shoot; however, it's gonna look very plain Jane, vanilla. The Sako and other German built rifles bring premium $$. If you need help finding one, or have any questions let me know and I'll be glad to help you or others OB's

Krico 600 $1000
Rem 722 $750
Win M70 super nice, NIB
here's a very clean T/C Super 14 Contender which will likely sell for $500-600

I'd like to stay under a grand for weapon, glass, etc. This would strictly be a plinker as I no longer hunt and don't know of anyone with a vermin problem.
I like the Savage. A buddy has a nice .308 that shoots like a dream.

I also have some 44 mag. Have ZERO use for it as I've never needed to compensate??.

That's actually a good idea. I'm embarassed I didn't think of the T/C as I've hunted and shot w/ them extensively, primarily w/ the Contender. The Contender platform would be fine for the 222 Rem. Actually, I prefer the Contender over the Encore as it's lighter and has an adjustable trigger. You might find one on the used market, but unlikely. 223's are common on the used market, but not 222's. You might advertise for one at the Specialty Pistols free classified ads. Lots of good folks there. There are a number of notable custom Encore/Contender barrel makers, including:
MGM
Bullberry Legacy, previously BullBerry Barrel Works
SSK Firearms
I've got Contender barrels from all three and have been pleased.
Just for the trivia, when Remington started working on the XP-100 bolt action handgun in the early 60's it was chambered in the 222 Remington. They thought the muzzle blast was too much in the 10" barrel they wanted. Easy solution: cut 1/2" off the base and they had a new cartridge, the 221 Remington Fireball (named after the impressive muzzle flash in a 10" barrel). Many years later, the 221 Fireball was necked up to 30 caliber by JD Jones (SSK Industries) resulting in the 300 Whisper. Ten years later minor changes were made in the Whisper by AAC and voila, the 300 Blackout was discovered.

Old man was such an arse and rude on the phone. I bought a used 14” 6.5 JDJ barrel from Ed’s Contenders back in the day (Gun List classifieds magazine). I called JD to ask for help on loading data. Dude pretty much hung up on me and said since I didn’t buy the barrel directly from him, he was not going to help me ... “click” and that was the end of that phone call.

When I first bought mine, my friends thought it was the silliest thing ever to have one.
