Got a spot that I’ve been toying with the idea of putting a few strip rows of corn in this summer.

Anybody tried this?

That is kinda what i was thinking as well! Wasn’t sure if the deer would even let it grow or if they would eat the stalks as it came up

If you have hogs I’m sure they would wipe them out. We planted a few plots with winter peas An the hogs rooted them before sprouting left the plots that didn’t have peas alone??!!!

We have done it once. It came in pretty spotty. We did not use fertilizer. It did produce corn, but it really didn't do a lot to hold deer, for us anyway. North Ms, Panola county if it matters.

Can't imagine of it would be that cost effective after seed and fertilizer + the work involved. Unless you are going more large scale.

We don’t have hogs so that is no concern. The spot is easy access and not far from camp so easy to get equipment in to plant. I’m probably talking about maybe 3/4 - 1 acre size

If you don’t already have it, give clover a try. Plant once and it’s good for several years.

I’ve been doing it for a long time but not for the food part of it. My stands out in fields I plant a set of corn down the side of the woods about 50ft from the edge. For whatever reason the deer feel safer walking out in it. I’ve been able to tell a huge difference in the number of deer that come out in the field vs years that I haven’t planted a few rows of it

I do it every year. Gotta plant a lot to be worth it. I plant 5-6 acres and its just about gone.

A few strips isnt gonna cut it. Gotta plant late also. Like end of june/first of july. Cant plant in march like your garden

It works, you just need to plant enough to keep the coons from getting most of it. It does cost a little. You'll need to spray at least two weeks before planting and then bush hog the dead grass down. You can plant corn flat if you have a planter and the ground is soft enough. You can also broadcast corn but using a planter of some type will give you better results. You will also need to fertilize and be prepared to spray a second time (Roundup Ready only) if you have weeds before the corn get up high enough to shade them out.

If you ever get a good stand of it though, it's one of the very best crops to hunt over.

Growing corn is easy if you do it right, but I wouldn’t fool with it if there are hogs or a shite load of raccoons in the area.

Careful. The duck hunters are going to be after you for talking about watering corn...

Plant heavy with just regular deer corn . No need for the expensive stuff. Just make sure you have serval acres, it get hit heavily from just shoots till all the cobs are gone.
