My data is 10 years old so no clue if it’s still the same but Lacassine NWR had to be the last place in S LA where you could stack the green if you hit the weather and migration right.
Tough hunting bc a good 20 minute boat ride, followed by a .25-.5 mile wade through the marsh to get the holes. Some areas you could pirogue too but the competition was stiffer. You had to be mad at them bc it was hard work.
Walk ins sucked but funny how a walk with a 4 man limit of green is much easier. I’ll assume it’s gone down just like everywhere has but still is better than most areas. I’ll also assume you don’t kill as much green anymore.

Hunted Lac on 3 bird limit days and never left without our 2 m and 1 off duck. Was way younger and madder back then.
4-5-6 duck limit days ruined Lac.
Land manager ruined our PI pump off when he burned and disced it.
GC lease ain’t got green no more either.
Ain’t mad enough to fuk with a duck anymore.

Kills me hearing how bad it is down there now. We hunted hackberry, creole, cameron a ton growing up.

Now the only hunting we do down there is if there is some woodies or Grey ducks stacked in the small swamp behind my mom's house on the river.

Public land in central TX isn't too bad- if you have a boat and can get away from the walk in morons. I've found myself about a dozen good spots over the years now, that I absolutely refuse to bring anybody besides my dog, my kids, or my 2 closest friends. We don't stack 4 man's every weekend, but I shoot enough to make it still worth going and working the dog.

Best bet- get a public land map, start scouting, and learn to fight.

Tryin to help a Brother out here: I can only comment on SELA public areas. Forget Pearl River South of Hwy 90. However, good wood duck hunting can be done boatless (pirouge is better off the Honey Island swamp exit off I-59.

Big Branch does have pirouge paddle in sections that can be productive at times but is also very crowded (best to go on the Wednesday or Thursday hunt if possible).

If you have a young kid/youth (15 and under), Bayou Sauvage sometimes has quality hunting. You can participate in the hunt but must oversee at least 1 youth who is also actively hunting. Very limited pirouge access but if you study the maps you can locate a couple spots that would grant pirouge access. It is better to get a small flatboat and bring pirouges if you have access to a boat.

You can also paddle into manchac if you’re feeling adventurous. It’s quite a paddle, a few miles of can recall. You’ll have to deal with some other folks but if you scouting the day time and get some super hallow spots that require some work, you’ll do ok.

Benny was totally unhinged, however when he was on his meds he was a brilliant guy who knew a lot of stuff. Problem was he was just flat out crazy and when he went off the deep end he dove in with both feet.

Benny was somewhat of a friend for a few years in fact my first dog was one he had to give up as a puppy. She became the best dog I ever had.

MsDucks days were some great times....

Not to get off subject bc this is private land related. Ppl still do very well in lower Cameron parish but even that’s taken a lick. My dad and his crew kill birds but they go through stretches where they hardly pull the trigger especially second split or late season. Between him and 2 buddies and anybody else they bring, they probably kill 500 birds a year on average but they can hop to multiple spots between Holly beach and Johnson bayou to follow birds. These were spots that produced 800-1000 birds 15-20 years ago when they essentially limited out every time.

8 bird/hunt avg is solid anywhere today.
We avg 20 birds/hunt in PI 2005 & 2006. There’s some miller property still avg that annually but those are very expensive bird$$$$. Am Press lease has gone down hill from the heydays down big pasture. Yep, still some historical spots killing good but fewer of them now. Share clubs are more social than killing today.

My mom's neighbor on the river- is from Cameron. He hunts Johnson Bayou and Creole. Says the same. Private leases, they still do ok- but that its mainly divers, redheads, teal, and some Grey's if they get lucky that day. Feel like we used to wear them out everywhere.

Rice fields near Iowa, watermelon bay, the marsh in hackberry. Etc.

On west fork I still see blinds everywhere. But rarely hear shooting.

I hunt there almost exclusively. What area are you looking at? It’s a hard hunt and the army corps has done quite a number on the access so the old maps are almost useless. I suggest scouting and talking to some other folks before you go. A lot of private land and leases got screwed, so you’ll need to keep your head in swivel if you roll the dice without scouting.

Remember no surface drives or large long tails. Bring a fishing pole too. Good luck!
