Any public land? Head north and west, plenty of ducks on public land that no one cares about hunting

I don’t think the men that have spent years and lots of sweat finally finding a public land honey hole are just going to give you GPS coordinates.

Just get out there and try them out

Whatever state you’re interested in will have information available about public land waterfowl hunting opportunities. There are some areas that are walk in/ paddle in only that may be worth it if you’re willing to work for it. It has gotten very competitive and there are plenty of inconsiderate folks out there though.

There’s no guarantee there will be ducks there though.

There’s still time to apply for lottery hunts if you’re in Louisiana. They can be hit or miss but it’s easier than fighting the crowds.

First post on this website wanting public land duck hunting scouting reports for an undefined location.

I've said it before: you better be glad this isn't MSDucks.com circa 2007. You'd get a 4000 character post on the philosophy of caulking miter joints.

Sure…what state are we talking about? There is a ton of public land in northeast Louisiana. My favorite was wading in flooded timber in that area.

Don't paddle into big branch on a falling tide

You're welcome

We used to smoke mallards at Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge, it's only about 10 miles across the Louisiana/Arkansas border.

76,000 acres

I haven't been in years so I'm not sure if it's still good but there were places you could walk in.

Where you live and how far you're willing to travel is a pretty important detail

Any specific areas north and west out of state to target? I am interested in making a DIY duck hunt somewhere in TX or OK

Oh sure.
Get to the launch at 2:00 a.m. and wait in your car till 4:00 a.m. Then combat launch with a bunch of other people. Set up 50 yards from the other 20 hunting parties and try not to shoot each other.

We typically do really well on Bodcau - don’t need a boat baw. They come in hard on mojos.

I’m not familiar with any of them, but I know they had some south Louisiana guys hunting salt plains NWR last December that did pretty poorly while we were limiting out with an outfitter. That is a very long drive and a lot of work to not do much better than your average Louisiana hunt. There aren’t many options for public hunting in that area of Oklahoma though.

The best advice I can give is to pick an area and research it the best you can. Your first trip out will likely be more of a learning experience.

They all suck horribly and are crowded. The best part is not killing shite and having to deal with idiots. It isn't worth the effort.

Its full of asshats running GTRs everywhere and hoped up mercs trying to run 60 through cypress knees.

We hunted it religiously until it got over crowded to a point you can not even work a duck any more.

Quite sad in all honesty, a many of good hunts were had in Redeye

I went to La Tech years ago and had a buddy with a camp in Fesenthal, we hunted it hard and did well.

Nothing like going out at 2 am to stake your spot, sleeping in the boat until right before daylight and then some yahoo come motoring in on you.

Take up field hockey, lacrosse, knitting or cooking and you’ll be miles ahead on money and time.

I killed many a species in FNWR back in the 90s. We had a deer camp in the town of Felsenthal and the property bordered the refuge.

We bow hunted the refuge several years before joining the club. Standing in flooded timber wearing waders hearing the squealers and mallards cut up right before daylight gave me the hardest dick I have ever had to this day. Those times were delightful for a young man in junior and high school.

I wish like hell my kids could enjoy the same things, but times have changed.

Or just get a friend to kick you in the nuts. That would be much cheaper and less time consuming as well. Same end result. I would say take up golf instead but that would honestly take 2 kicks.

I’ve almost given up on public land hunting. There used to be some epic hunts up in NE LA but those were so long ago that I start sounding like my granddad did when I bring those up. The only up side is that my buddies boys who aren’t boys anymore are still mad at them. They go to Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma hunting public. If there is a shred of a possibility there is a duck in a 1,000 mile radius of Monroe, LA they probably know about it and will travel at a moments notice to get there. I just thought we were mad at them but this a whole different level of bitterness. Luckily I have been able to take advantage of some of those times when they find the X and trust me, it’s definitely not easy getting to most of their X’s. You almost have to ask yourself, is it going to be worth it?
