Personally I find the carpet pythons to be more fun - they are more arboreal, thus more active, and they aren’t as common as ball pythons. The morphs are all relatively new - they’ve become a “designer” snake fairly recently. All of mine eat really well and are tame. And they don’t get too large - about the size of a large rat snake.
Here’s my Jungle Jag carpet, Zebra Jungle carpet, and 60/40 Diamond/Jungle cross:

Yeah I definitely like carpet pythons more. And boas. And many colubrids. But, ball pythons are good first snakes, if that's what a person likes.
Also, I'll never understand the apparent NEED a lot of people have to tell others about how much they dislike snakes. Just look at this thread - tons of downvotes and a bunch of condescending comments. And they say it like you should care that they hate snakes. It's a weird fricking mentality. I can't even begin to explain how much I don't care that Bubba from the OB would never have a pet snake. To me, labs are one of the least appealing dogs I could have. Even though lots of people here have them, I've never mentioned how I don't really like them. Because I assume nobody gives a shite what I don't like, and I don't have a weird need to tell everyone.

Please reconsider buying if you are not ready for a 10-15 year commitment. They aren't dogs, but they deserve to be actually cared for.

I agree...it’s only a positive for me. Since I’m completely comfortable with them, when I encounter one I can safely (and enjoyably) identify a threat or not.
For instance, I know I have posted the pic before, a rat snake came at me in a stand while pig hunting. Sucked wind at first but after knowing what it was I got to enjoy a cool moment. I’m honestly glad it happened

Exactly! Thanks for all the tips everyone.
Lots of douchey comments in here.
I’m a normal white collar 30 something guy with an 8 year old who shares my love for reptiles. We understand the commitment and have already purchased a 20 long terrarium, a hide, substrate, a heater and a water bowl and are doing homework before finding the right snake for us.
We look forward to an easy going pet that we can take care of in between soccer and baseball and fishing trips. With our busy schedule it’d be unfair to leave a dog at home for long days at work and practice.

They are one of the best beginner snakes imo.
Do you have other pets?
Warning. You will want another snake after having the ball and really get into the hobby.
Fwiw, ive had 2 and a red tail but I had to rehome them due to other animal issues.

Hit one of the reptile shows - Repticon
Just saw a sign yesterday. Repticon will be in Shreveport this weekend March 9th and 10th.
I'm thinking about taking my kids just to look around and gauge their reaction.

We bought one for one of my sons when he was 7. We took it out of the cage by hand and put it in a separate large box when we fed it live mice. When it got to about 4 feet long and almost as thick as a grown man’s wrist, we gave it away to a guy who kept snakes as a hobby.
We could let it slither around the floor at times, lay on our laps. and it liked being handled. I can say it was a good snake.

As of Saturday... Me.

I took my kids to the Shreveport Repticon. It was smaller than I expected, but this is the first year they have come to Shreveport. I suspect more vendors will make the trip next year as it was packed with people and the few vendors there were doing well.
One particular vendor had some amazing morphs seen in the background of this pic...

They were a little pricey though.
I ended up purchasing a basic Bongo morph. I just thought it was the most bad arse looking snake on the lower end of the price spectrum. Notice all the "alien heads" on her.

Meet "Sydney the Snake".

That's pretty close. $350+ for anything pied for sure.
Some vendors would haggle a little bit, but the ones with the good stuff were pretty firm.

First year of college my ball python got out of the aquarium. Probably about 3.5 feet.
Was missing for around 3 weeks. I couldnt find him anywhere. I mean im looking in the couches and chairs without completely ripping them apart. Two of my roommates girlfriends wouldnt sleep over while it went missing.
One morning I heard a holy shite down the hall. My roommate, who used to be deathly afraid of snakes until I got mine, woke up to the snake curled up on the pillow next to him. After that, I used empty handles of liquor filled up with water to secure the top.

It spent the whole first day elongated up the side of the tank probing the top for any escape. The tank has a metal screen top with clips that keep it locked down.
She's comfortable in her surroundings now...
