Found this little guy outside of our office. I'm guessing it is around 12" and none of us are real sure what it is. And no, we did not kill it...

When we approached him to snap some pictures, it flattened out it's body. Guessing it was trying to make itself look bigger.

Dekay's brown snake (Storeria dekayi). Harmless. Eats slugs and other invertebrates.

Someone said ground rattler also. I have heard this term growing up and all I can think is that they are called this so that kids wouldn't play with them.

Dekay's brownsnake 100% always get them in our pool. Very docile, can easily pick them up.

I think an assload of people call these ground rattler's....they are venomous but they probably won't kill you although little kids have a hard time kicking out sometimes and require a hospital stay.

I don't know about ya'll, but I've always found this to be a stupid arse name. Why?

Because I've never seen a tree, sky, or water rattler! All those motherfrickers are on the ground.

Others have already ID'ed correctly, however, in my neighborhood, this same pic except the head separated and would have been followed by a message declaring it a copperhead "and it'll kill ya". Then they will argue that they are correct.
