I’ve had my Weatherby Vanguard .300 WSM for over 10 years and love it.

The only time I ever use a different rifle is when it’s primitive season.

Prices vary based on synthetic stock vs wood, etc... but it’s never given me any trouble

7 replies so far and no one has given hard specifics why...other than a feeding issue.

What are the reasons for being so against the 300wsm? I don’t own a magnum, and have had my eye on a .300 win mag, but the short mag advantages are intriguing

I have a 300wsm in a browning A-bolt. Leupold VX3i 4-14 50mm. Great all around rifle. I don’t recall spending but about $700 of so on the rifle. Scope was about $550 on eBay.

I shoot 150gr ballistic silver tip by Winchester. Seem to do the trick.

You don’t need a light 300 mag unless it is ported. Too much thump.

Have shot a LOT with 300 wsm and 270 wsm. I have not experienced these feed problems. I've read a lot about it. I've had guys tell me about it. Never really experienced it.

And you never need anything ported. The 300wsm doesn't have too much thump IMHO. I find the recoil comparable to my 30-06. Very manageable and noticeably less then the 300 win.

The velocities are going to be less then the winny, but you are going to have a much more compact and manageable rifle. I would describe it more as a 308 mag if that makes any sense.

Unless you are shooting 400 yards plus and elk hunting, go with the .30-06.

Have no problems with this statement other then the two aren't really comparable. Same can be said for the .270 win.

If you are reaching out a bit, go with the 300 Win or 300 WBY.

No problem with this either. But I'll add that if you want ALMOST comparable performance in a shorter, more manageable rifle, the WSM is a more then capable.

Only negative i can think of is ammo availability. 300 win mag is gonna be 10x's easier to find than short mag ammo imho. That being said I've never left my bullets behind when going hunting so its a non issue to me. I love the short action and 3" shorter barrel (on most guns) that WSM give you. Ballistics are for the most part identical to win mag. If I did a western hunt, I would put 2 boxes of ammo in different suitcases and go hunt, not worrying about lost ammo.

If anyone who has any real experience with the calibers care to give any examples of why the wsm is to be avoided, I would like to hear them.

I love my 300wsm Browning Xbolt Hells Canyon Speed it's the most accurate gun I own shooting Barnes ttsx 165's. This season I've carried it deer hunting in LA and elk hunting in CO and the weight savings when you are hiking above 10000ft are a life saver. The only negative I can think of (and it's a very small one) is if you want to shoot above 200 grains I've only seen that offered in 300 win mag. Buy what you want because everyone is a ballistics expert when it comes to picking rifle calibers I just try to buy one of everything lol.

The 300WSM is a fine round and will offer outstanding performance.
My arguments against to go along with what’s already listed:
If you want short and handy, buy a .308.
If you want reach and power, buy a .300 WIN.
WSM is the monkey in the middle. It’s a real good monkey, though.

I got one in 2002 and never regretted it.
Can’t recall a deer taking more than a step or 2 after pulling the trigger.
Most were dead when they hit the ground.
Loved the short action.

I have it in the OB special. Tikka with Meopta glass. I shoot Barnes and it's a back driver. Couldn't be happier.

With modern day bullets 9mm is all you need. Forget the 300.

What are you planning in hunting with it? I know this won't be a popular opinion, but there is no reason to use anything bigger than a 30-06 to deer hunt, and even that is a little excessive from time to time. 7mm mags, 300 win mags, 300wsm are all overkill on whitetail unless you are consistently taking shots of over 300yds.

I won a Thompson Venture 300 Win a while back & its never been shot. Know this isnt a classifieds board, but it made me remember it, if you are interested. I was gonna put a scope on it and let my son shoot it, but decided on getting him a Tikka .270 instead.

Meh, all the 300s are pretty close.

I'd do a 30-06 and just load it up hot.
