I’m looking to get a 300 WSM for next hunting season.

Can anyone recommend a good gun at a fair price?

I’m looking to stay between $400-$800

If going with a 300, why go short?

Lighter gun, less recoil, similar ballistics

If I’m incorrect please let me know

They don’t feed well.
You don’t need a light 300 mag unless it is ported. Too much thump.
Unless you are shooting 400 yards plus and elk hunting, go with the .30-06.
If you are reaching out a bit, go with the 300 Win or 300 WBY.

300 WSM

I love mine.

The shorter barrel and shorter action are what I wanted.

I would love to hear from someone that owns one why they hate it. I have owned a 7mm mag and a 300 win man that I sold before getting my 300wsm.

The accuracy is great, ballistics same as win mag, ammo is same price, what are the negatives?

What a great incorrect generalization.

Mine does just fine. I am sure your husband can handle a 300 mag just fine too.

What does the 300 Win offer over the 300 WSM?

I have a Browning 7 mag and a Remington 700 Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation 300 WSM. I shoot the 7 mag more just because I have had it longer and am more comfortable with it in the deer stand. However the 300 WSM was great off the bench sighting it in and never felt the recoil much.

I’ve had mine since 2003 and still enjoy it. Its an A-Bolt and shoots the federal fusion ammo nicely. The deer usually fall where they stand if I do my part.I’ve never had a feeding issue that some speak of. My wife gave it to me for our 1st anniversary so I don’t plan on getting rid of it.

Ammo is easier to find and it’s cheaper I believe.

I have a Remington Model 7 Short Action Ultra Mag, it barely kicks (more like a push but is loud as hell) compared to my 30-06 but I have the heavy fluted barrel and a padded stock. The WSM in not much different from the SAUM, they are both sweet shooting and you should be good up to 600 yards.

I've never had an animal go over 70 yards after being shot with mine.

It's like shooting a 243 with the knock down of a 300 to me.

if you want a short mag get it. Everyone likes different things. I have 308, 243, 30-30, 30-06, 26-06, 20ga slug gun, and a 270wsm.... 99.99% of the 270wsm is what i take. Super flat shooting and groups the best of any deer caliber rifle that i own. I love the short action! Never lost a deer with it. Get the 300wsm if you want, and enjoy.
