Got all the feedback that I wanted - thanks for the help fellas.. I bumped this thread because I’m picking him up in three days and have no clue what to name him

Here’s his pic for reference:

All names will be considered but I’d like to go with something with a New Orleans or creole kick to it

Been looking for a boxer recently... had a lady reach out to me on Facebook and send me this message. Was wondering if any of y’all would be concerned about purchasing this pup

quote:

He will be ready 10/15, both parents are AKC but he will not have registration because he was the only pup in the litter and the man that owned the stud would not give me info without me giving him more than I was willing to, he went for 6 week check up and shots yesterday and was healthy, his testes are late dropping and vet said they would hopefully drop by 9weeks but if not he would not be fertile

Assuming this lady is not a scammer (I’ve talked to her on the phone and saw her Facebook, seemed legit) - would y’all be concerned about the registration issue and the lack of ball droppage? I’m not concerned about breeding, just don’t want issues down the road

TIA for the help

If I had to guess one or both of the parents have a limited registration with AKC meaning any pups produced by either are not eligible for AKC registration. The intent is to allow breeders to protect their breeding lines but I've also seen it used by breeders as an upcharge. If you can get the registered names of the sire and dame you may be able to find out.

If you are set on getting this pup I would consider a contract with the breeder, including a vet checkout of your own. Many good breeders do this no matter what. I did with my shepherds. I also included first rights to reclaim any pup should owners not be able to care for them or if a pup were found to be abused.

Don't they have a procedure for certifying a dog woth no pedigree as long as it meets breed standards? The pup would be the founding father of a new line.

We just got a dog last week. We tried rescue and breeder. The whole process was so dumb. Breeders think they are on a gold mine because of the uptick in dog ownership lately. Adoption people were always crazy and are 10x worse now. Had to fill out a five page app at one place, minimum week wait but haven't actually heard back after 3. The dog I want is long gone, I'm not going to adopt something I don't want and have it around for ten plus years. Also they tried some real zingers on the application such as "how much do you think it costs to own a dog each year?"

We gee yall have me stumped. Even if I haven't had dogs my whole life do ya think the internets might tell me???

Interesting. Never thought about this.

Not sure if this is relevant or not but she’s only asking $500 for the dog - I’ve seen some as high as $1500

Like I said, I’m not really interested in breeding him or studding him out. Just mainly want a purebred, brindle boxer for the family

Honestly, I’m not sure

Just got off the phone with the vet here. She didn’t seem to concerned about the medical issues - she only said that if the balls don’t drop, they highly recommend neutering to prevent more issues down the road

Have any of y’all had issues like this with a puppy before? Is it common?

If the vet says all is cool then it comes down to this. What does purebred mean to you? Is it having papers or just knowing?

Undecended testes (cryptorchidism), is relatively common and they should be removed if they don't descend. I'd be somewhat concerned about growth and development though, but opinions vary greatly on the topic even between vets. As I mentioned, my experience is with GSDs and I would never desex one until at least two years of age.

if you don't intend to breed the dog, sounds like you don't have any issues. Just get him snipped and enjoy your new pal.

GSD? German Shepherd?

I guess I’m mainly concerned about medical issues (which I feel better about now) and possibly being a mixed breed. But based on the pictures I have, this dog is 100% boxer. Just didn’t want to find out a year or two down the road that this is some sort of pit-mix

Sorry if my questions are stupid. Just want to do all my homework before I take on a 10+ year commitment

Thanks for your help, it’s greatly appreciated

Questions are good. Shows you are responsible and care. One of the things I always pay attention to with breeders and prospective owners.

Never go by pics. You'd be surprised, but if you're happy go for it. Could always do a DNA test.

Good luck and enjoy your new buddy.

I remember reading about waiting, that fixing them too early increased their risk of cancer, it worried me because I spayed my Boxer the day she turned 6 months old.

It’s a beautiful pup, good luck to you, a Boxer puppy made me say I will never get another puppy.
She wasn’t bad she just didn’t sleep, ever, & she was wild.
She will soon be 9 & is the most loyal dog.

It’s night and day with boxers. My dog that recently passed away was a saint. He was such a great dog that I had three friends go out and get boxers, and two of them were nightmares as puppies

No, MS

I just called the vet office that she brought the pup to. My local veterinarian has a few questions for them.. Waiting for the vet to call me back

The only issue if the don't drop is the price in surgery to neuter.

My local vet is 80 bucks vs 300.

My vet wanted to know if they had felt the testes at all... from what I understand, if they are close to the scrotum, it’s a simple, basic surgery. If they are closer to the diaphragm, it becomes an exploratory surgery and gets more complicated

So yea, exactly what you’re saying

You're doing your due diligence which is what all should do when purchasing animals, cars, boats, planes.
