Have y’all had any experience with Hornady sst or Gmx ammo? It groups pretty tight in the rifle, just wondering how it will do on a deer

Both SST and GMX are good to go. I use barnes in all my guns though.

My rifle shot clover leafs with the SSTs but I quit using them after not getting exits. Now I use 140g accubonds and haven’t lost a deer yet.

Got some eldx to try in mine. Last year I shot Federal fusion with good success also.

Anything 7mm is going to do fine on any deer in the South eastern US.

I dont know shite about GMX, but SST are terrible, terrible deer cartridges. They explode on contact. I hate them.

The GMX is a solid copper or monolithic as Hornady calls it. It will penetrate very well.

The SST is a ballistic tip. It expend it energy quickly and explosively and will not have deep penetration and may not exit.

Just know that and pick your bullet accordingly.

I dont like them. They come apart too easily and fail to exit often in my (limited) experience.

I have no experience with the GMX but it should work fine. Its probably on the opposite end of the spectrum from the SST.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'm a partition/A-frame blowhard so the SST is basically the antithesis of what I like in a bullet. It has a thin jacket, it opens very violently, and its not bonded. Its going to give some spectacular bang-flops but also might leave you with a well shot deer and no blood on the ground. I want exits 100% of the time and I'll take short clear blood trails over bangflops with the occasionall dog job.

Eta: the GMX is going to exit always, but you'll probably want to stick it in a shoulder bone so you get some expansion. At 200 yards slipped between the ribs, it probably isn't going to open much.

GMX should work great for that. Looks like its a barns copy so if it works as good as the barns than shoot it. You may have the opposite problem though.

I like the partitoon because they have a soft front half and solid back half. I did have one fail to exit, but it was a 5 yard shot, 180gr .30-06 straight in the shoulder and it still almost made it out the hindquarter. Otherwise they have been flawless

He shot the SSTs. Grouped tight but I’m not a fan of a bullet that doesn’t pass through. I taught him to shoot through the shoulder bc I don’t want to look for them too hard

I've had good luck the with the sst in my 30-06, but I'm shooting 140gr Nosler AB in my 7mm-08. Actually sighted it in today. Browning x-bolt micro midas. Shot well.

The SST is probably going to disappoint you then. The partition is the perfect deer bullet IMO, and the A frame the perfect elk bullet.

There's the other side of the table who likes an SST style bullet for deer, and its a good argument. You get really quick (and violent) energy transfer and lots of really quick kills. It could be argued that the SST is more appropriate for deer than the partiton. I personally just put more stock in having an exit hole than having violent destruction.

What im always thinking about is what if i see the buck of a lifetime, 100 yards away quartering hard away and about to dissappear forever. I want to be able to confidently take that shot, and be confident that I can drive the bullet to the opposite shoulder. The partition gives me that while still getting good energy transfer on broadside shots.

I agree with you. I like the sst in my 06 and haven't had a deer move after hitting them, but I can see where it could be an issue.

Shot sst's for years. When my daughter's starting hunting this is what I put in their rifles. Both shoot 7mm 08's. Always had an exit hole but the bullet would explode inside. Animals did not go very far which is what I wanted for my kids.
Saw a Meateater show with Steven Rinella eating a deer heart. Thought I'd like to try it. Since the sst's sling lead everywhere and I didn't want to eat any lead if I could help it I decided to try the GMX.
Same grouping I get with sst's and they hammer the deer.
Get the GMX and shoot with confidence.

The problem with partitons is theyve never been the best shooting thing in any rifle I owned. The best I've ever seen them shoot is a hair over MOA, usually more like 1.5 MOA out of my rifles.

In one of my rifles, they are minute of paper plate

I tried partitions in both of my 270’s. The groups were down right terrible in both. I’ll probably stick with American Whitetail.

True, but in my experiences with SST in .270, they drop like a sack of potatoes and their insides are transformed into jello.

Shoot them in the neck and you can eat all the organ meat you want.

My son shoots a 7-08 Browning X Bolt and we’ve had great luck with the 139 Gr Hornady SST. Groups really well, and in all seriousness, unless a big rack comes out, it’s getting neck shot.
