re: 7mm mag vs. 30-06?

all great rifles. I grew up with 30.06. I remember the season my cousin bought a new rifle. He put away his 30yr old Rem pump .06 for a fancy new browning 7mag. He shot (destroyed)3 does and a fox that weekend I went up to hunt with him. He then decided to sell it and pull back out the ole trusty .06 pump.
Just depends on how you will use it. 270 30.06 7mm debate will go on forever.

I have n idea how many deer I've killed with my 270, but it's a whole hell of a lot. I have had damn few walk away. Now, I have never just shot center mass on a deer either, so there'd that. For the record, I liver shot a doe with my 30-06 that fell dead in her tracks. I shot a buck with the same rifle that I never found a hole in and he too fell in his tracks (true f'n story). I've shot a doe in her chest with a 300 wsm that I tracked for 75 yards. Fact is, shite happens.

Shot placement is more important than the difference between calibers IMO. Unless someone is gonna be hunting something bigger than whitetail and/or shooting really long distances a lot, just get something you like to shoot and practice. It'll make a bigger difference.

seen it destroy lots of good meat. Overkill.
I've heard this a lot of times and think it is a myth about 7mags. A well placed shot will not ruin the meat. I've killed tons of animals with my 7mag and never had a problem with meat unless I made a bad shot. If you shoot through both shoulders you are going to ruin some meat with just about any gun.

Thats true. 75% of my shots are at close range so I usually go with a head or neck shot unless I am uncomfortable with the shot then I will go for just behind the shoulder and it rarely messes up meat unless as stated I hit the shoulder and any gun would turn that into groundmeat.

I agree. Shot placement destroys meat, not caliber. I usually shoot high shoulder and that will destroy both shoulders no matter what you're shooting.

My favorite argument to that is that I dropped a 305 lb pig at 125 yards with my 25-06. The point? Bullet placement. I'm always getting bashed to hell by my magnum-shooting friend because I do almost all of my hunting with either a 30-30 or a 25-06. He hunts with a 30-378 wby mag

I have both and they both kill the shite out of deer.
I use the 7mm Mag when I hunt pipelines or powerlines. It is a straight and flat shooting gun. Large ammo selection. I got it as a wedding gift, because I knew I'd be going after Elk and Mule Deer one day.
It is a little overkill for deer, so I'm careful to hit them behind the front shoulder, otherwise both shoulder roasts would be almost obliterated. It is loud as hell and the ammo isn't cheap. Packs a nice kick too.
I never had a problem with my -06. It is a killing machine too. Doesn't quite have the range of the 7mm Mag, but that isn't a problem for 98% of shots I'll ever take at a deer. Ammo is cheaper and a larger selection.
Both are great calibers and you'll be okay with either. I always bring both to the camp and decide which gun I'll use depending on what stand I'm hunting.

It really doesn't matter what you choose.
Noone is going to say anything if you show up with a 7mag or a 30-06. I got my 7mag for a good deal, and it's my favorite gun. I've got most of the other calibers, but if I have a choice, that's the one I prefer.
If you're shooting boxes upon boxes every year, ammo cost could come into play, but you'd probably be reloading your own ammo anyway, which would make it a wash.
Either one would be fine. Pick one and enjoy.

We were going elk hunting so i went to Wal mart where I could get an employee discout and the only big caliber they had was a Browning x bolt 7 mag. My buddy says that will kill an elk so I got it. Put a Leupold on it and dropped my first elk at 400 yds. The down range energy of that 180 gr was impressive. Next elk hunt dropped one at 400+, last hunt dropped it at 250, which seemed like a close shot.It doesnt kick too bad, espically when that elk is in the crosshairs. With deer you have to be more careful with shot placement. The gun just seems dead on

I hunt with both.
Old 742 remington woodsmaster -06

Love em both.
180 grains with -06
150 - 7mm
that 30-06 has killed more deer tthan lyme disease

To the OP - Shot placement is key. Find the caliber you shoot well and stick with that. I don't care if its a 223 (which my daughter has killed deer with) or a 7 mag, if you don't hit it you won't kill it. If you don't hit it right you probablt won't find it. With that being said i shoot my 30-06 and my 7-08 pretty good.

Dropping anything at 400 yards is a good shot.
It sounds like the board is split at 300 yards.
Less than 300 yards: 30-06 is more popular, but 7mag is fine.
Over 300 yards: 7mag is more popular, but 30-06 would work with marksmanship.
If you have to choose, it depends on the use of the rifle.
But, as most on the OB would agree, why not just get both?

7mm mag is the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.

Both are great guns. That being said, I carry 2 guns to the camp and every hunting trip I make... Both are 7 Mags..
