And I will join you. And I've killed whitetails and exotic deer with both of the others. Why do that to your shoulder? Give me my .270 Winchester and call it a day.

I hate any rifle caliber with "magnum" on the end of it for hunting in louisiana.
I like them because, just like magnum condoms, they make me feel like I have a big dick

30-06 = .270 for all practical purposes IMO.
Both AMAZING calibers.
IMO, .308, 30-06, and .270 are the 3 best and most versatile deer calibers available of the average guy.

I hunt in La. & have alot of places where there are 400 yard shots. I'll take a magnum over the 30-06 anyday. You never feel the kick shooting at a deer. If you have trouble sighting it in get a lead sled.

I'm not buying a $100+ item to sight in other people's shite
I'll be the little man around here and admit that I really dislike shooting a rifle that kicks like a pissed off plow mule.

quote:I can only think of a couple places on our lease in MS where you can have over a 300 yd shot and still be able to get to the deer to drag it out. Majority of areas are 200 yds or less. Something else I love about hunting there.

I have shot more than a couple deer over 300 yards and one over 450 yards with my 300. win mag. I personally would not take a shot like that without a magnum cal. I mentioned having muzzle brake in a previous post, it was worth every penny to me.

I'm not gonna hate on any round as I have a closet full of different ones, but this is what someone who is getting into it needs to understand (IMHO). YOu will get many different opinions from many different people. The fact that all these opinions exist is due to the fine line that separates all these calibers. We talk about velocity, BC, "knock down", recoil, etc......
This is fact. All these calibers will get the job done. They get the job done in Louisiana, Colorado, Montana, and anywhere else you want to hunt on the North American continent. I am not a HUGE fan of either caliber you mentioned. I like the 270 because I was raised with it. I would worry more about the rifle and glass then I would the caliber.

Why would you not take a shot like that with a caliber less that wasn't a magnum? What you're saying is you wouldn't take a shot at 500 yards with a 30-06, but you would with a 270 WSM, 270 WM, 243 wsm, 6.5 wsm, or even a 7 mag? How about a 7 SAUM? You would have a problem taking a 500 yard shot with 270 win pushing 3100 fps but not a 300 win mag at 2800 fps?

Me and Chuck Hawks agree on some things
quote:
The short or standard length 7mm Magnums (with 140-150 grain bullets), short or standard length .300 Magnums (with 165-180 grain bullets), the 8mm Remington Magnum (with 170-180 grain bullets), or the European 8x68S (with a 170 grain bullet) all have muzzle velocities of 3000-3150 fps, and similar trajectories. Also in the same class in terms of velocity and trajectory are the .340 Weatherby Magnum and .338 Remington Ultra Magnum with 225 grain bullets.
The hunter seeking a flat shooting rifle for use on medium size game gains nothing by using one of those calibers instead of a 6mm Remington, .25-06, 6.5mm Remington Magnum, 6.5x68S, .270 Winchester, .280 Remington, or 7x64 Brenneke. All of these calibers also have muzzle velocities in the area of 3000-3150 fps, and all of them have similar trajectories with bullets of similar ballistic coefficient.
But the shooter blasting away with a 7mm, .300, 8mm, or .338 Magnum certainly pays a price in muzzle blast, recoil, and accuracy. No one likes to be punished, and few if any shooters can shoot as well with one of these cannons as they can with a standard caliber.

I`m not saying you cant take that kind of shot with a non mag caliber. because you can. I`m just saying I wouldnt because im not comfortable with it. IMO if you are comf. with a particular caliber by all means shoot it.

25-06 Ackley is where its at, my new favorite. However love the hell out of my 270 also and 30-06

I'm partial to 30-06. I tend to go with items that are versatile and time tested.
