I have two mauser 96's that are pretty nice. My dad built one and his gunsmith buddy built the other. They are both fine arse guns, especially for how old they are. I just want another one
I should start trying to decide what action I want right now. It'll probably take me at least 5 years to figure out what action/barrel I want

Actually, the 6.5 x 55 is my #3 deer rifle. I like it quite a lot. Now you can build one out oif a surplus 96 action as you mentioned, but CZ has some very nice rifles in that cailber that run in the $600-700 neighborhood that you might want to consider. I have the CZ Full Stock model which I think looks pretty neat.

Hi everyone. New to site, but I'll take the ole aught six over any mag for deer hunting.

I'm just not a fan of most magnum cartridges.
I just think they are overkill for deer hunting.

I use a .270, bit out of the .30-06 and 7 mag I'd choose the .30-06 for the hunting I do. I never take shots further than about 200 yds, and even that's rare. If I would do whitetail hunting on plains or other places with long range shots or hunt bigger game I'd invest in a gun chambered a magnum round, but I'd still use my .270 for the type of deer hunting I do now.

most magnum cartridges.
But, a 7 mag behind the shoulder looks no different than a 06 behind the shoulder..
cost-- last year 7 mags at walmart were just about the same as 06's..(Rem. 150 psp)
recoil 7 vs 06... i can't tell a difference.. I shoot a TC single shot and a Rem. 700 in 7 mag, and have owned several 30-06's, and still do.. very little difference, in fact, a Browning semi-auto in 30 06, without boss was the hardest kicking one of the bunch..
I think it's what you like, what you have, what you feel comfy with, cause anyone can make justifications and excuses for either..Both are great guns..

I actualy have a 7 mag, and just retired it last year. It shot good but I always wanted it to be a 270.

Did you happen to just buy a remington .270 not long ago?
Posted on 8/12/11 at 4:39 pm to jimbeaux82
I think if I buy a factory one, it will be a sako deluxe classic in 6.5x55 swede

I call bullshite on the bar w boss kicking harder then the 7 mag. Unless, of course, the laws of physics are different where you are shooting.

YES I most certainly did.

Another fine choice in caliber.
It seems you know who I am.

I've been reloading for my 300 wsm this summer and finally got a load dialed in today. 4 shot group "one hole", actually measured .6" at 100 yards. Factory Browning Medallion. 22" barrel pushing 165gr pills at 3100 fps. Zeiss Conquest glass. You can't ask much more out of a "cheap" rig. Gonna stretch it out to 500yds soon. We'll see if it holds up.

Mother of god, my dad bought a k98 mauser (8mm) a while back. That pile of arse kicks harder than my 7mm mag. Doesn't help that it has a metal buttplate.

No, I feel ya. That's why I put it in " " marks. The guy I shoot with was shooting three rifles that he has more the 10,000 in. He didn't do as well.
My definition of "cheep" rifle is personal and has changed over the years, with the biggest change as of late. Point is, you can get a great rig over the counter if you put time into the details. I also have a cheap (not quotation marks) 700 in 270 with nikon buckmaster glass that shoots one hole with sloppy reloads. I'm getting it rebuilt just because.
