That's because you're so old you don't where you left your other guns at.

I've made that mistake before.

The "what is the best caliber" is a debate that will never end.
Every round is a great round if used in the right conditions. No one can tell me that there is another round out there that has killed more deer than a .30-30. There isn't one. Would I use it for a 300 yds shot? Of course not.
I don't deer hunt much, I'd much rather duck hunt, but I did buy a deer rifle a few years ago for those occasions that I get the opportunity. It is a .308. For me it was the best most scenarios that I would see in West TN and North MS.
However, I had the opportunity to get a Weatherby .257 mag for a really good price. It is also an awesome little round and I really like it. Shot a deer with it last year at a little over 250yds. I had practiced that shot a few weeks before and felt comfortable with it so I made it.
For me though, I wouldn't make a shot on a deer over 300 yds without a lot of practice. I don't like all the variables that enter on a shot that long and I don't want to wound an animal.

a 6mm Remington

First deer I ever killed was with a 6mm. I made a gut shot and didn't have an exit wound even though the bullet never touched a bone.
It was luck that I even found the deer cause he didn't bleed.

I too rarely have an exit wound Fin. Reason being is that little Remington core lock 100 grainer literally explodes like a grenade on first contact, creating a bunch of shrapnel wounds inside the deer. Bullet placement is key. Hit the deer in the chest or neck, they drop like a sack of potatoes. No exit wound required.

My deer drop like that anyways. 7mm w/ my bullets does the job just fine.

I've shot a lot of deer, not bragging but I worked on a farm and we had a depredation permit to keep deer from eating up the crops. So I've killed deer and I've seen deer killed with an array of calibers.
In our part of the world, shooting white tailed deer, there is no right answer, it's just like some one said, you want a bud, or a miller?
The distance argument is not valid to me, I've witnessed numerous deer killed out past 1000 yards with a 30-06. This is measured with a laser range finder. This guy won't take a shot during deer season under 500 yards, it's just what he likes. He practices and is very effective at long ranges.
I hunt with a 7mm wby mag. Why? because it was given to me by my grandfather and I like it. I can't shoot it near as good as the guy that shoots the 30-06, but I don't take shots over 400 yards and rarely over 200 yards.
Now my favorite gun to kill deer with is a 30-284. It's a .284 Remington necked up to 30 caliber. That SOB is awesome.
Moral to the story, shoot whichever caliber you can shoot well.

I have a .243 now. But will upgrade soon. I have two sons so I think I'll buy one of each that way I have something to hand down to them. May get a few more calibers to add to the collection also.

The 6.5's are really getting a lot of attention as of late.

The 6.5x55 swede will always be my favorite deer caliber. I can't wait till I can afford to burn a couple grand on building a slick one.

Start buying parts a little at a time. It won't take long before you have one put together. It would be a fun round.
