Is there good quality hunting ammo available for one that won't break the bank?

I use the old military issue stuff in my M38, M44, and my M91/30 bolt actions. I’ve also used Wolf and Tulammo steel case. Someone else can address hunting ammo.

Outside of hand loads all I have seen for factory are fmj and soft points. Lots of Russian steel case out there. Doubt you will find many high end hunting loads from factory offerings. Good round though ballistics wise it’s close to a 308

If you can find any Winchester has made a jacket soft point before. 180 gr bullets.

Guy that lives near me wants to sell one, I think it was his Dad's. I haven't even seen it yet, he says it's a Russian sniper rifle. He doesn't know much about guns, he had a box of ammo and read me the size off the box over the phone. I guess he will bring it by tomorrow.

Pretty sure I’ve seen Hornady 7.62x54r loads with the SST bullet. Probably among the best in terms of accuracy and performance. Those Wolf 200 grain soft points would cause some bigly damage though I would imagine.

Most likely a 91/30 Mosin Nagant PU sniper then.

That's what I'm thinking, but we'll see.

Since no one else mentioned it, if you use military ammo then it's probably corrosive. (I think it's the primers)
Buy some traditional Windex with Ammonia and clean with that after every time you shoot. Then go through your normal cleaning process.

Maybe you will luck out and it will be a druganov…. I have a Norinco NDM-86 Chicom copy that’s a safe Queen. Most likely it’s a mosin nagant bolt action

I have some old Sellier and Bellot 180gr 7.62x54r soft points I bought a good 25 years ago I bought just in case I ever needed to use my old Mosin to hunt with. I'm pretty sure you can still buy them.

That mosin kicks like a mule. Usually after about 5 shots I don’t want no more.

So a couple things real quick...
most American brand ammunition is going to shoot like crap and here's why. The American manufacturers use bullets sized .308. Most mosins slug at .314. So what I find works best is sellier & bellot ~.311 and the cheap brown bear 203 gr sp. But good luck finding either right now.

Yep, that's what it was. Very rough too, I let him keep it.

Without knowing for sure, I'd think there are going to be a couple decent brands in this caliber.
It's not just the Mosin, you've got a few PSL owners.

Depending on the markings and price I might have still bought it.
I have a couple of Mosin nagants and I enjoy shooting them
I also like my Swiss K31

I had an old Mosin. It kicks like a mule. It’s an AK round with more powder behind it.

I really enjoy shooting my old 1928 Mosin. I can generally get 20-30 rounds down range before I call it quits for something a bit lighter recoil like a .44 Mag.. LOL
What's the availability 7.62x54R these days? I'm down to 1.5 spam cans now.
