Looking for something w/ less recoil than 7mm-08 (for kids). Anyone use either of these calibers for deer or hogs ?

If so, what weight bullet would you recommend ? I'm concerned that these may be too light (especially the 6mm) for anything less than "perfect" shot placement.

Have you tried the reduced recoil 7mm-08 ammo from Hornady?

I have no experience with the 6mm, but my kids and I have killed 15 or so deer and hogs in the past 2 years with the 6.5mm, shooting the 140 berger vld's and have had no issues to complain about. Actually surprised at how good the blood trails are. I've intentionally shot deer a few inches farther back than I normally would just to let my dogs track and no deer has gone over 60 yards.

My middle son shoots a 7mm08. He is 10 now and I just bumped him up to the full power 140 grain core lokt loads . The last 2 years he’s shot the managed recoil and was accurate with them. My little girl (8) shoots a 243 and is accurate with it. I’m optimistic that she will draw blood Saturday morning behind our house with it. Fingers crossed.

You could easily use a 120 grain bullet in 6.5 cm and it would be more than effective.

a .260 would be almost identical.
the 6.5 cm has easily taken red stag and elk, though they were likely using 140 grain bullets.

the 6mm cm is about equivalent with a .243

As you know, the weight of the rifle will greatly effect the recoil of a certain cartridge.
One of my really good friends bought his son a compact 7mm-08 and that gun kicks pretty good. His son much prefers his dad's Tikka t3x ctr.

I got a 6mm as my first rifle when I was 12, still have it. We sighted it in when I got it and have not adjusted it in the past 35 years. It is deadly on whitetails.

My 6mm is a custom build using an 03-a3 action and Douglas barrel. It’s been fed handloads and is crazy accurate. 100 gr Nosler partition or Sierra 100 gr bullets. If I was down to only one rifle this would be it though 7-08s are my favorite caliber

6mm is great for PRS type stuff but I consider the 6.5 stuff more effective for hunting.

Probably more load development with 6.5 cripplemore, so go with that.

As a starter deer/hog rifle for kids, I'd choose the 6.5 CM over the 6mm CM.
Loaded to similar pressures:
6mm CM and 243 Win are ballistic twins
6.5 CM, 260 Rem and 6.5X55 are ballistic triplets.

Having said that, my first choice would be a 7-08 or 308 Win, both using reduced recoil/managed recoil loads. The key is the reduced load. A reduced load 308 Win has less recoil than a full power 243. When I last checked, the 6.5 CM doesn't have a managed recoil load and 260 Rem's managed recoil load has been discontinued . 15 years ago when my son started deer hunting, I bought him a 308 Win and loaded my own reduced recoil load (factory loads weren't yet available).OTOH, Last year I came across a steal on a T/C Compass bolt rifle so bought one in 7-08 Rem to one day be a grandkid's gun.

If you are looking for a solid caliber for a kid my youngest shoots a 22-250. 64 grain noslers are absolutely filthy and we have yet to lose a deer with it. Very light recoil and can absolutely cut hairs. I use It a ton Myself and leave my 270 at home.

This goes against everything I was taught learning to hunt. It’s only ethical to make the most accurate shot possible and put the animal down as soon as possible. You sir are what gives this sport a bad image sometimes. Please do your best to be a more ethical hunter, there will be plenty of opportunities for your dogs I’m sure.

That's fricked up and cruel. People make mistakes and sometimes make less than ideal shots, but to intentionally make a less lethal shot? You need to re-evaluate how you hunt and how you want to represent hunters.

Before we hang this guy, does he mean he shot two ribs back to double lung instead of drt double shoulder? If so I don't really see an issue. He didn't say he gut shot them on purpose guys.

Exactly. There is no such thing as deader. I shoot behind the shoulder. I don't care if they drop or run 100yds. If you double shoulder shoot a deer you are throwing meat away. That's unethical.

OP get a 7mm-08. The recoil difference between that and a 6.5cm is neglible. Use 120gr bullets.

I've got news for y'all, I have had a shoulder shot deer run off before. 270 130 federal fusion. He went about 70 yards. There is no guaranteed drt shot, except a brain shot, which I'm against ( but that's just me).

That already has very light recoil. Doubt the CM would be much better.

Howdy! Have shot the 6.5 Creedmore for years and it is a great cartridge. Have now moved up to it's Big Brother, the 6.5 PRC which is about 200 fps faster. Still shooting the Hornady 143 gr ELD-X bullet and it is a mean combination with literally no recoil. That's my 2 cents.

I'll be re-evaluating all day today. Thank you.

Shoulders yield about 4 pounds of meat on a 100# doe.

Did any of yall even bother reading the entire sentence I wrote? "A few inches back, no deer has gone over 60 yards" Yall apparently don't hunt. How many gut shot deer have you found within 60 yards of the shot? If i'm looking at a good buck, I'm breaking him down through both shoulders. If it's anything that wont go on my wall, I don't breakdown shoulders. I like to watch my dogs track. Simple as that. I have never intentionally gut shot any animal. Bunch of liberal pussies. It's a shame I have to explain myself on a fricking outdoor forum.
