I bought a full size PSA Dagger a few months ago and it shoots great. I’ve had no issues so far with over 200 rounds through it. I got a great deal with the pistol and 10 magazines for $350.

Surplus.com has a few different Glock models that are LEO trade ins for $399.

PSA runs specials on used police guns, so a Glock is possible.
PSA also sells a whole series of handguns - Daggers which are good for the money. I see the Compact and Micro at a local range and these do very well.
Tisas has a cheap 1911 government model which is surprisingly accurate and reliable. But the hammer bites the web of my hand a bit.
But I think that a Remington 870 Tac 14 Hardwood is a better choice. Still small enough to put behind a nightstand or bed head and you can vary the rounds to bird shot to avoid over penetration inside the home while devastating to an attacker.

I'd like to reiterate that .40 cal glocks can be had at incredible prices. Those are a really great option for somebody shopping on a budget.

And you can always drop in a 9mm conversion barrel if you want to shoot 9mm.

You can find a PSA base dagger for $240 if you keep your eyes open on their site. Or get their emails.

Canik SC Elite. Better trigger than anything else in that price range.

Or any of the Caniks that have been mentioned. For a budget 9mm, Canik is the smoothest gun on the market. Only brand of 9mm I buy at this point.

I carry a Compact Dagger and love it, I could see myself picking up a full size and a Micro in the future

Why a metal mag? The glock factory mags work great.

The metal mags hold 15 rounds as opposed to Glock mags holding 10. Gives it a little more weight as well. Metal mags also drop out much easier than do Glock mags. Glock mags are fine too. 16 vs 11 is the idea.

My carry gun. Remarkable how well it shoots for being a subcompact. Much better than the Springfield hellcat I had.

The VP9 is such a reliable weapon. I’m a huge H&K fan.

I’m about to get the HK 45

I haven’t seen anyone mention it but CZ p10c. Get them all day long for well under $400. Fantastic gun! It’s basically a Glock with improvements but with the same reliability too.
