What type / grain cartridge do you hunt with. Moving to this gun this year and looking for suggestions

150 gr. Usually Rem Core-lokt.
You're good to about 100-150yds, which is about all you should be shooting with the 30/30 anyway.

I like an over/under sight and a small scope.
I mostly use this in my leaning stands. Under 50-75yds, I use the open sights. Over that, I use the scope.

Zero it at 100 yards. It's +1 at 50 and -1.8 at 150.

I love how versatile and portable it is, which is why I like it in my leaning stands. I don't have to fear brush that much, it allows me to be quite quick in target acquisition and firing, but I can get decent precision for the longer shots (where placement is more important to get a quick kill).
I'll admit that it's probably my favorite gun.

I use the Hornady Leverevolution 160gr.
My daughter started hunting with me and wasn't big enough to shoot my rifle but my dad had the trusty 30-30 so we use that. Shorter gun with less recoil and deadly. With the leverevolution you can accurately shoot out to 175+yds because of its designed tip. Its not the typical blunt nosed tip of the 30-30 round.
She's killed two with it so far and they both dropped.
I also take it if I'm hunting in thick woods and want a bigger bullet.

If I'm going to a box stand, I'll usually take my 7mag (and if i'm feeling nostalgic I'll bring my old 30-06).
But if I plan to be in any type of brush, I'll take the 30/30 lever.... every single time.

I've got a bunch of notches in my .30-30. I use 170gr federal blue box. Cheap, shoot well, kill deer well, available everywhere. Have used 170gr core lock with good success as well.

The beauty in the .30-30 is that it shoots good size bullets at moderate velocity so pretty much any ol soft point bullet will perform well. No need for premium ammo. They also don't seem to be picky about ammo at all as far as shooting decent goes. Mine groups about 1.25" no matter what I feed it.

I suggest staying away from the hornady leverevolution squishy tip stuff. I shot a few deer with it and got very poor results. Jacket separation, poor penetration, no exits, etc.

They are not worth the very little you gain in usable range of the rifle. A 170gr soft point will work out to 200 yards or so and most people are gunning on luck beyond that anyway in a hunting situation.

I inherited a .35 Remington which is similar. I am going to try to hunt with it this year.

Not hornady red tips. Worst ammo ever for 30-30.

I've heard this and it might be enough to make me switch even though no problems so far. I don't let my daughter shoot past 100yds anyways so the extra distance is kind of useless.

I think the issues I had with them were from shooting deer too close with them. All were inside of 50 yards and one was about 10 at the most.

Either way, I don't have those issues with regular ol soft point round nose stuff at any range. They always expand and always exit. The .30-30 is an old school caliber and performs well with old school bullets.

What he said 100%. Have killed several with mine. Great caliber for any place where you are taking shots <100 yards

This is pretty much my exact setup.

Heard good things about the Hornady Leverlution rounds as well.

Thanks, I had the damn gun sighted in beautifully with 170 grain Winchester soft points, hitting a little lefy of center but tighly grouped. Changed over to 150 grain Winchester bonded round and they went all crazy. Tried to adjust and couldn't. Had some 150 grain core lokts around and put 2 in the diamond at 100 yards.
Should I get re-boresighted and start over or call it a day?
I gave away my Weatherby 308 because I had no confidence in the gun and now I'm worried about this one.

Never ever use hollowpoints. I always kept some around for things I wanted to die but not necessarily find. Didn't turn on the light one morning before hunting and grabbed the wrong box. No exit wound whatsoever which meant no blood trail. When I skinned it found that it had hit a rib and blown out a section big enough to put my forearm into on entry. Died quick and I could follow trail of disturbed leaves but will never make that mistake again.
