Numbers were better a few weeks ago than now which is a bit weird.

Early this morning I went out on the front porch while it was still almost entirely dark and I heard something flying on the feeder. I hit the light and it was one of these cool looking bastards (Hummingbird Clearwing Moth):

I have a lot of them. They are sucking feeders dry rapidly. So early.

You can sit out in my backyard and see a dozen in an hour. They are everywhere right now.

I think I am at peak. No way to count them. I have 8 feeders going, and have multiple birds at each. Some even come under my pergola to feeders I put there as an experiment. This is my first season at this location. Next season will be nuts.

Peak should be in about another week or so in Central Louisiana. We seem to be a few days behind this year, at least at my house. I'm up to about 30.

Crappy pic but this guy has been hanging around trying to catch hummingbirds. Coopers Hawk? Peregrine? In North Hou

You can make your new fence boards look like your old ones with some Earl Grey tea, steel wool, and white vinegar.

Ha. The old ones will soon be replaced. That’s the last little section I need to do

Likely Cooper's hawk. Not likely to catch a hummingbird but any other birds are on the menu.

Kinda new to this. Should feeders be put out in shady areas or open sun? Close to structure or in out away from buildings?

Honestly? Doesn't matter. Place them someplace you can enjoy watching them.

Sugar water in the shade may last longer than in the full sun in the summers, but you should still change it out every few days anyway.

I've heard it recommended to place some colored flags/tape/streamers around the yard to get their attention to a newly-placed feeder but haven't found it necessary myself.

They prefer edge areas. Next to a fence, woods, etc. I keep my feeders in the shade, too. Most of my birds have already migrated and I have a few late ones stopping over now on their way south. The prolonged late summer heat has slowed some of the migration, but I can tell my numbers are way down from what they were two weeks ago. I'll miss them, but my weekly sugar bill has gone down a lot now!
