2017 Chevy 1500 - Program to Full Time V8
Posted on 8/31/20 at 1:29 pm

Someone suggested I go ahead and program my truck so it doesn’t switch back and forth between a V8 and V4. He says he has seen damage to the lifters, and that the switching back and forth will make them weak.
I plan to keep the truck for at least another 8-10 years. 50k Miles currently and out of warranty. Anyone have any more experience with this? If so, can you recommend a program/company?
Also I am just driving around town and on the highway. Not towing

I have a 2010 GMC Sierra with the 5.3 and this is definitely an issue. I had to replace the lifters a few years ago, however I'm pretty sure this isn't as big of an issue with the newer motors like the one you have.

Think those motors came out in 2007ish and there were problems the first few years. but I think they have fixed that issue, although i'm not sure what years they made the fix.

Range Technology offers a plug In for this. It doesn’t delete anything just blocks the afm from switching from v8 to v4. I have one in my 2018 GMC and it works great. You can actually unplug it while driving or plug it back in while driving . They run around $200 I believe.

If I can find it I will link it. Someone did a tear down of some higher mileage motors with this technology and couldn't find a difference in wear from the full time cylinders and the variable cylinders.

Please do ASAP. I am looking at doing the same thing to my 17' Silverado as I am currently at 72K.
TIA

I have an '09 Chevy and had the displacement on demand crap turned off and when the lifters started coming apart, the dealership blamed it on that.

The problem isn't the displacement on demand itself. It is the lifter design.
You can disable it all you want those lifters will still be used.
To fully fix the problem you need to do a DOD delete, and replace the lifters themselves.
ETA:
Just noticed "2017"
The issue with bad lifters ran in the GenIV LT base motors from 07-13.
The newer trucks like ours with the GenV motors are fine. The lifters and AFM is different. It seems they have corrected the issue as it's not a common issue anymore.

This is what I have in my 2010 and it works nicely. But as stated I believe this issue has been corrected in the newer models.

It's the crappy hydraulic lifters. My engine bombed twice. GM fixed it the first time and then refused the second time when the engine was 60 (!) miles out of warranty. frickers.
They know damn well it is a design issue and they refused to do a recall. As stated, they corrected the issue in the new engines.
First one was an 09 that had all the problems. Current one is a 19 and has had no problems.

I have a 2011 with 165k and I used a diablo sport trinity to disable the v4 thing around 100k. I didn’t notice the lifters knocking or anything like that, I had several friends with a similar truck and all of them dropped lifters between 80-120k so I thought I’d be next. I’m not sure if it did anything because the lifters still move unless you get a different cam but it helped me sleep.

Put the range afm disabler on my 15 Sierra. Plugged it in, never hit v4 again. It doesn’t get into the computer either, so if you bring it in for a service of any type, just unplug it. The shop can’t track it like a programmer. Summit racing link

I have an 2011 with 160k and I did a full DOD delete any decent mechanic says to do it automatically after warranty runs out. Diablo is a good brand I'd go ahead and just have a mech do the full DOD delete mine was just south of $600. If anything he should be more concerned with the tranny going down. Had to have mine rebuilt at 145k and that was like $3600. That one hurt!
