Want to pick up a 1911 5” 45. Will only be used for target shooting, maybe nightstand gun, not a carry gun. Budget is sub-$800, but I’m not averse to a $400 gun if it’s best value.
So far I have narrowed it to:
SW1911 Stainless $725
SW1911 E-Series Stainless $725
Springfield Loaded Parkerized $680
Kimber Custom II Dual-Tone $629
Remington R1 Parkerized $469
Rock Island (not GI, step FS Tactical) $365
ATI GI $360
Any feedback is appreciated, which to avoid, which to go for. Thanks in advance

I hear good things about the Ruger 1911's and they would fall into your budget as well. I would consider a Ruger

I like the Rugers also. The only thing is that I am getting one on trade in 10mm and wanted to go with something else. Maybe I should wait to get it, and if I like it, get the 45 also.

I have a colt that is a safe queen. But my carry is a Para Ordinance. It’s a solid 1911. Looks like you are on the right track. Also look at the Sig and Kimbers. One of those will be my next purchase!

I've had a Taurus, Rock Island, Citadel, and Ruger 1911. All of them would fall into the price range you specified. All of them have been very reliable. I still have the Ruger and don't see myself getting rid of it. For what it's worth, the Taurus was the most reliable of all that I've had. It would cycle anything I put in it. I did have a Sig 1911 that was the most expensive of all of them. It was also the most finicky by far.

Nothing wrong with 2 Rugers, just sayin.

This is the way I've been leaning. I'm not terribly thrilled about the scalloped slide, but the SW E-series seems to be the production gun that is closest to custom.

Love that black frame.
Another vote for the Ruger

Armslist has 1911s for days.
I had Remington R1 that was nice but parted ways with it. However, my Kimber Pro Eclipse, probably never part with.

I've never seen a pistol sling brass like a S&W 1911
I swear that thing would eject casings 10 yards

I have a Sig Tac Ops 1911 in .45
and
Rock Island Ultra FS 1911 in 9mm
Love my Sig Tac Ops, but I really enjoy shooting the Rock Island, It's a great gun.

for a sub $1000 budget, if buying new, the Ruger. If you shop around, you maybe able to pick up a Dan Wesson Pointman or an STI Trojan on the used market for ~$1000 which is FAR and away more pistol than the Ruger and that Ruger is a really good gun for the money.

Ruger and Springfield are always my recommendations for sub $1k. Sub $600, RIA makes decent stuff. Above $1k to about $2k, I would go Dan Wesson.
Side note, I plan on getting a Triarc 2011 built in the next year or so. It looks incredible and I hear they are insanely smooth.

Any model of Sig 1911 fastback will exceed your budget, but also your expectations. Worth spending $200-300 more than your allocation. As reliable a 1911 as you'll find anywhere for any price. I have a two tone ultra carry in .45 and a carry model Emperor Scorpion also in .45. 2000+ rounds through the combination, and never a single misfire.

My son and I went to the gun club y-day and a guy there had an STI 2011 DVC-L
It was in 9mm. It was the smoothest shooting gun I'd ever seen. He had worked the trigger down to around 2 lbs.
It pretty much ruined me and the pride that I had for the little Springfield that I was testing.
To the OP. Just make sure you test the triggers on the the guns before you buy. I have a Springfield Champion. Its an officers 4.5" gun and it's a beautiful gun but it had the trigger lock on it on the mainspring housing. It had the absolutely worst trigger on it I've ever seen on a 1911. It was probably 8lbs. I just finished replacing every part in the frame with Wilson parts and ended up polishing the sear and last night played around with the trigger some more.
Now it's spectacular. That being said it was a $250 upgrade.
Test your triggers prior. I did not and have paid for it.

I own a S&W E-Series (it's my avatar photo) but I honestly think the Ruger is a better buy. I did a video review of a commander-sized Ruger a few years ago and I compare it to my S&W. You can see my comparisons in the video.
