This sound interesting... How do you do this?
There are kits from fusion firearms and sti, they can do most of the fitting for you and you can assemble it. I looked into it, but I dont have the time or patience to build a 1911.

but I have it on good source that Remington is quietly behind the push for shelf life primers.
What's that?
Primers go bad after a certain amount of time?

the number of times you have mentioned that you will be buying a glock 19 very soon is getting to be ridiculous. Just go fricking buy it or quit saying that you are.

Why would one get a 1911 in any other caliber than 45 ACP?
I have a kimber 45 and I love it. A 9mm would be awesome for a number of reasons... Cheaper ammo being a main reason

Springfield and S&W are my narrowed down brands thus far.

Crawdaddy,
There've been some good suggestions, many of which are higher end 1911's. Thought I'd share my personal experience in case you decide to send less money.
Although I've been buying/shooting handguns nearly 35 years, I bought my first 1911 just a few months ago. I didn't want to spend a whole lot since I wasn't sure I'd like the 1911 enough to justify a more expensive one. I ended up w/ an "American Classic," made by Metro Arms in the Philippines. At first, I was a little leary about buying a gun made in the Philippines. There are two large manufacturers in the Philippines making a number of quality, entry level 1911's (Rock Island Armory, Citadel, American Classic and Firestorm). These guns are well-repected on the 1911 forums on the 'net. For $450 I got a Commander sized 1911 w/ Novak style rear sight, beavertail safety, extended slide release/safety and combat trigger/hammer. 300 rounds later I'm still very pleased. In addition, it's nice and slim for concealed carry. In fact, it's now one of my two many guns for cc. LINK
There are a lot of very nice higher priced 1911's out there (Kimber, Colt, STI, Springfield, etc), but there are now some good options if one doesn't want to break the bank.
Like someone else already said, 1911's are addictive. American Classic has announced a new model that should be available soon, an Officer's version called the "Amigo" (don't like the name, but they didn't ask for my help naming it...). I'm hoping to get one once it's been on the market a few months. LINK

Here's my Springfield.
I also hear Taurus makes a decent 1911 for under $500.

Has anybody shot the STI Spartan? They ate very attractively priced. My experience with STI firearms is limited to the STI Trojan, which was awesome, although picky with mags.

Its the new way for them to go after the guns, they know its going to be hard for them to come right out and take them so they plan on making them to expensive to use and have. Three main things are insurance policies on each of you firearms for 1 million, 6 month shelf life ammo, and serial numbers on each bullet. Cant think the exact name of the bill but its been being bounced around in the house and senate for a little over 6 months now.

I've got a Colt M1991 A1 -Series 80-
It says Stainless, but its a dull brushed looking silver. I know they have a name for that but cant think of it.
Anyways the gun feels good in my hand and shoots well.

I have a Colt GI model and love it. Shoots so smoooooth.
Same here. Found it at a pawn shop for $600. Was in great condition, very little use by first owner. Love that gun and I also own a Glock which is great too.

Stay away from a Kimber. Three friends of mine owned one and every one had reliability issues. For the price, these should work like a swiss watch out of the box.

Ive dealt with 3 different Kimbers, all mine were/are good to go with no hickups what so ever. What model did they have?

My kimber hasn't given me and problems either. Mine is probably 12+ years.... I've heard the newer ones have some reliability uses, but I've never experienced it with mine.

Think I will go with the Springfield A1 Loaded. Slidell gun show is this weekend. I will see what I can get for my G22 with Lasermax to go towards the 1911.
