Don't buy the Mach 2. Few friends bought those & are disappointed. Stick with the hmr.

Both the 17 HMR and 17 Mach 2 are great guns. I think of guns as a tool. When using any tool, a good outcome depends on using the right tool for the right application. For general vermin hunting smaller than foxes, the 17 HMR has more range and power than the 17 Mach 2 . Where the 17M2 really has it over the HMR is in squirrel hunting. The past couple years I've squirrel hunted w/ friends who've used both the HMR and the M2. The HMR is too destructive on squirrels, especially if you have to make a body shot. For squirrel hunting, the M2 is a nice compromise between the 22LR and the HMR. It has more power than the 22LR and a trajectory close to the HMR. I just bought a M2 and am very pleased so far. Mine's a Savage Mark 2 FV (synthetic stock w/ blued barrel/action and Accu-trigger.) My gun is 1/2" low @ 25 yds and 1/2" high at 50 and 75 yds.

Drawbacks of M2: ammo is harder to find than the HMR; only 4 different loads of ammo available; limited availability of new guns (Savage, CZ, T/C Contender and Handi-Rifle right now).

Drawbacks of HMR: Ammo is more expensive ($15/50 rounds compared to $8/50 rounds for M2); very destructive on edible game; much louder than M2.

Take your choice. They're both great guns. The Savage is hard to beat.

The M2 is the only one interesting to me at all. The HMR just seems like the answer to a question no one asked. Too bad the Mach 2's day's are numbered.

But see,

Ammunition manufacturers caution that the .17 HMR is unsafe for use in semi-auto firearms.

Like posted there is at least one, I don't know for sure but I think the shoulder of the case with the rimfire make it a little dangerous.

When I was buying my 10/22, the guy at the local gun shop said that he could modify it to shoot the 17 m2. Has anyone shot such a modified 10/22 or ever heard of anyone doing it?

I have a Marlin .17 bolt action and I don't shoot it much anymore but it is by far my favorite gun. Accurate as hell and just an all around good gun.

Skeet, I don't personally know anyone w/ a semiauto 17 Mach 2. When researching 17M2 guns, I did come across this warning re: 17M2's in semiauto's.

There is some company putting these mods out. Let me see if I can find it. I have a buddy that has one in 17mach2 as well as .22 mag.

Yo skeet, the legend of the 10/17 is alive and well on other forums.

I saw a thread a while back where a guy was talking about building one from a receiver he got from "a guy" and it had pics, but I couldn't find it.

I used to have the savage 17hmr with the bull barrel a few years ago. It was a great gun. My only complaint was when I was hiking to my hunting spot with gun slung on my shoulder the clip we dig into my back.

Great gun other than that.

This was another complaint and if it was not digging in it would trip the clip release and the clip falls out
