The US is now disgracefully bad at short track speed skating

Apolo Ohno's 2002, 2006, and 2010 competitions were awesome and the best part of those Olympics outside of men's hockey. So much racial animosity between him and the South Koreans because of his Japanese heritage. He won a gold they thought they got screwed out of in the 2002 1500m. The Koreans still say he false started to win gold in the 2006 500m. A huge crash at the end of the 2002 1000m cost him the gold.
Checking in on 2022 and it looks like we're total garbage.
Apolo Ohno was the major figure in the program but we had other guys in that time frame win medals like JR Celski and Rusty Smith. Now we can't even find people who can make finals.

I’d like to say I care and of course I want the US to win gold in everything, but I’ve never met a single person that speed skates. How are we supposed to be upset we aren’t good in a sport no one attempts?
ETA: maybe our new guys just need a flavor saver?

How is it dumb and why is "sport" in quotations?

Were we ever good other than Apolo Ohno?

Ohno and the small ripple he produced was basically USA short track. Outside of a couple of individual medals we mainly have relay medals many of which were when Ohno was on the team.
The problem is short trackers can't be developed in a vacuum and there is very little interest in short track in the US. It is theoretically possible to develop the world's greatest speed skater with the right kid, right coaching on a rink in Arizona without even competing against another skater until the trials. Outside of an understanding of drafting speed skating is just against the clock. Short trackers have to consistently train with and compete against other high-level short trackers which just don't exist in any real numbers in the US. Plus short-track phenoms tend to have a very specific body phenotype and they don't exist in great numbers in the geographic regions where ice skating is big in the US. There is a reason why you don't see Norway and The Netherlands dominating short track.

It's just crashes. It's as much luck as skill.

Has NBC given up on Binne is the next great skater hype train yet? Santos is the best skater the US has.

Figure skating or freestyle snowboarding/skiing. Any sport that is judged like figure skating or gymnastics.

Don’t care what other countries think. We built our great country. They failed to do the same
