I've heard differnt figures on the intervention well, but $100 million seems reasonable.
I was told between $150-250 million all depending on how tough it is to drill

This is a disaster of potentially epic proportions, but anyone who realistically thinks that it is going to put BP into bankruptcy needs to go take an intro-level business class. There is 0.0% chance of that happening as a result of this.

Look at their Balance Sheet right now. They could write a check to cover the TOTAL amount estimated to eradicate coastal erosion for the next 30 years.

They ain't goin' anywhere. A'ight.

I would think if anyone goes out of business it will be the Cameron Co.

By looking at that map, Black Bay and all of Breton Sound could be fricked

Black Bay could take on a whole new meaning. And that area has been the best in the state for trout the past few years (numbers).

From those maps, it appears that the Grand Isle/Cocodrie areas aren't impacted yet. Let's pray the wind/currents keep taking it east (sorry Gumps and Gaytors). But until the source is stopped this only stands to get worse.

my understanding is that they were only insured for 250 million

Typical for large companies. Insurance covers most of their oopsies, and they hope they never have to dip into savings for a catastrophic event.

While i completely understand where you are coming from, I really hope this doesn't happen. (Though I think it is inevitable we are all going to be affected.)

I think you are right. I seem to remember a similar event in Mexico affecting most of the southwestern gulf coast. That was a purely selfish comment-I would not wish this disaster on anyone.

Wow, the right people are on the job for sure "The delay meant that the Homeland Security Department waited until late this week to formally request a more robust response from the Department of Defense, with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano acknowledging even as late as Thursday afternoon that she did not know if the Defense Department even had equipment that might be helpful."

The Valdez lawsuits took many years to play out and this will probably be no different.

They are still settling the lawsuits 21 years later.

What's their involvement? I know that the name was mentioned earlier in this LONG thread. My brother has been working for that company for about a year and loves his job.

are you at work? they're on flickr and I know my workplace blocks them. I'm honestly not sure which website noaa is actually issuing the forecasts on. I'll do a little digging I guess.
