Until they stop the leak trying to contain or disburse the oil is just photo ops, public relations and waste of money.

They're trying to stop the well flow - if for no better reason than it's in their best interest. But in the interim, they'd be negligent if they didn't try to mitigate the impact of the spill by using containment booms, skimming operations, chemical dispersants, FIRE!, etc.
Stopping the well flow is paramount to resolving the issue, but BP has the personnel and the financial resources to pursue multiple approaches.

We as a society expect them to do something.

But booms in surf and 4 ft waves does not help a thing. Chemical disbursements will not help as long as there is more oil coming up behind it. After the stop the leak. Skim the surface then such measures may work.

From the point of public perspective they have to do these things. But my point is that they are not gonna help the problem.

The Lafayette news reported class action law suits already going ... $5 mil from fishermen (not sure if just shrimpers).

Friend of our owns a shrimp processing plant in Delcambre ... his wife told me that he's sick with worry and very stressed about this.

I think that we all are.

"Ittakeathief"

You are a moron. Well then what do you do about the oil slick in the meantime...just forgot about it and let it wash up on our shores and marshes without a fight??

Thank god you are not heading up the efforts.

Estimated 200K-210K gallons of Crude leaking from the wellhead per day.. B.P is going to drill a relief well which is expected to take 3 months to complete. If this scenario unfolds that would be an estimated 18-19 million gallons of crude. The slick is forcasted to make landfall from Florida to Texas.

You can look at the 2 web sites on the first page of this site for forcasted maps of where the slick will be by May 1.

Not good.

Will deep sea fishing around Fourchon be affected?

From the point of public perspective they have to do these things.

If the gulf was flat and it was a sunny day, like it was immediately after the accident, these measures would be much more productive. The weather is complicating BP's clean-up activities, but they can't stop.

They may not be helping much, but they've got to be having SOME positive result, even if minimal. Wouldn't you agree with that?

In fairness to Obama and Jindal, the damage was severely underestimated up until a couple days ago.

It may still be underestimated.

Being Mis informed is no excuse. Bush and Blanco may have indeed suffered from "Under Estimating" they were still bashed for their roles in a response that was too slow.

NO DIFFERENT HERE!

Jindal and OBAMA underestimated this thing....on bad info. Still not a TOTAL EXCUSE. After all Do you honestly believe that every thing that could be done was done before this thing hit the coastline. I say OBVIOUSLY NO.

I guess this shows that the Dems or Republicans are FAR from perfect.

My frustration level from this thing grows by the day. I know it may be a losing battle due to circumstances but I would like to believe that everything that could have been done......would have been done from the start and I just dont think that was the case. (Even if it would have made little difference in the overall outcome.)

WSJ about size of leak

The above link talks about how as much as 25,000 barrels could be leaking into the gulf despite claims of BP and the USCG.

I think they will, unless the British Government bails them out.

I am in favor of every available resource to mitigate this disaster being used including the military and than back charging BP. If it breaks them in the process so be it.

I don't understand why the stock hasn't dropped more than it has. I would have dumped that shite yesterday morning. If what I'm hearing is right, I doubt they'll be able to operate in US waters again.
