The chemical, the upside down funnel, the burning of the slick, and the rov's attempting to shut the BOP are all smoke in mirrors to show that they are trying something.

It seems to me like they kind of thought that shutting the BOP was the easy fix and that it wouldn't be difficult to achieve. When that failed they then went into panic mode trying to scheme up how to quickly kill the well. Ultimately it might have to be through the relief well that they can actually kill this thing.

What pisses me off, and millions of other people as well, is that BP's negligence will cause so much more damage to the coast than they will ever repair

they all just waited too damned long...the feds, state govts, and oil companies. apparently some smart folks from XOM, APC, CVX, and some other companies are now headed to Houston to discuss options. why did this not happen last week?

if it's hits shore a month is not enough. There is oil residue in Alaska 20 years after the Valdez. Oil dissipates very slowly.
I'm not talking about the oil already in the water, that's another story all together. I'm just hoping they are able to control this damn thing before then

I'm sure APC has been involved since day one considering they own 25% of this well......

The estimate of 20,000 barrels has now officially been doubled.

It takes BP forever to make decisions about anything. They almost lost Thunderhorse because they sat on their arse trying to figure out what to do.

Can you tell us what happened at Thunderhorse - in a nutshell?

Also, has anyone seen any discussion about the size of this reservoir, pressure depletion, flow rate?

I'd like to know as well. Is 20,000 bbl/day the official estimate now?

If this indeed is the only well in the reservoir I fail to see how anyone could know these things if the well had not been flow tested yet. There could be comparisons from reservoirs the same age and formation of a similar size and of the same depositional environment possibly. What seems especially puzzling is how a cased well blew out in the first place.

Double that, as per the last page in this thread.

It doesn't matter. The point is that whatever damage occurs to the Louisiana coast as a result of this spill, regardless of which company is "responsible", will not be adequately repaired. That is why oil money that flows into Louisiana is akin to blood money.

I'm still seeing 5,000 barrels a day, 20,000 would be a catastrophic.

42 gallons to a barrel.

I can't find any news releases saying that 20,000 was an official estimate much less 40,000 bbl/day

What people don't seem to realize is that the oil/gas industry takes more safety precautions than any other industry in the world. Safety is ALWAYS the #1 concern. It's incredible that more incidents like this do not happen, but they don't due to the strict safety policies and unbelievable training. But unlike other industries in which accidents happen regularly and you never hear about them, in oil/gas all it takes is one time for something like this to happen like this and the entire world knows and is critical of you for it
