Nobody could guess with any certainty right now. Google IXTOC 1 to see what unfolded on the Mexican side of the gulf in the past.

I am just throwing something out that obviously is impossible, but could they not stack another BOP on top of the non-functioning BOP that then use the new BOP to cut off the flow? My understanding of the BOP is that it can cut directly through the riser.

I was making a small joke, I know you can't really duck-tape the well.
Although if it can't be fixed with duck tape... it's not worth fixing
I wonder if this dome idea of theirs will work though.

What if I disconnect the leaky garden hose, screw the nozzle directly on the faucet, and then close the nozzle?
I think that's what he's asking.
Because then you'd be "fishing" down the hole wasting drill time. The "nozzel" is thousands of feet underground not to mention thousands of feet under water.

You going on record saying that the current administration will try to exploit this travesty?
I guess anything is possible, but it wouldn't be very smart. The flip-flop label is just waiting.
And I think they're smart enough to realize that the whole country is hopelessly addicted to oil. Stopping drilling here just means more drilling in the Niger Delta or Venezuela. And that would mean the next spill would happen in a third-world country without a fraction of the resources to contain it that we have here. Liberals (me included) would have a hard time folding that into the platform.

You can book a lot of engineers have worked extremely long hours recently thinking this one out. Apparently they are going to use The Discoverer Enterprise to lower this new collecting device into place.

There aren't many people who live anywhere along the gulf coast who can't say that they don't someone who works either directly for an oil company or an oil and gas related business.
Or all of us that use gas, diesel, plastic, etc. on a daily basis, or eat food fertilized by natural gas and harvested by tractors or combines. We want to put all the blame on BP, but in reality it's everyone's fault.

Do we think they will even bother beginning clean up of the coast line before the leak is stopped? It would seem counter productive to clean only to get hit again. I am just curious. Also this link has an interesting article that says the leak is closer to 20,000 barrels a day and cites the federal govt. standards for estimating.

if they are fabricating some sort of miracle cap, then i really don't know what to say. i have never seen this occur. however, i have seen many pieces of material that were fabricated over the years.

So they are going to try to snub with the Enterprise and let the DD3 drill the relief well simultaneously?

also, there is no need to cut the riser when you can just remove it from the lmrp with wrenches.

Aight guys, i'm headed out. I'm going to get a huge scotch and pretend this is a bad dream.

the best thing to do would be to try and unlatch the LMRP from the BOP and try and set a storm packer of some sort inside the weld bore.
