I know the rig is in the gulf. I don't know when it would arrive on location or if it is already there.
Since the DD3 was already contracted to BP and in the gulf already it makes sense for them to use it. I would suspect that BP would have a hard time finding another rig that would be just be available that could handle this job.
I have no idea the actual time that it would take to complete the job I am just going on estimates that I have heard.

considerring the amount of sliding (directional drilling) that has to occur, it will take a few months.

Transocean spokesman Greg Panagos later said: "I can confirm the Discoverer Enterprise is moving to assist at at Macondo. "However, we have no arrival date at this point." The Discoverer Enterprise will join Transocean’s semi-submersible drilling rig Development Driller III, which is expected to arrive near the site of the BP-operated well in Mississippi Canyon Block 252 this morning, local time. The high-performance drillship was already under contract to BP in Mississippi Canyon Block 778, where it was working on the the Thunder Horse South development, according to Minerals Management Service (MMS) information.

I am just throwing something out that obviously is impossible, but could they not stack another BOP on top of the non-functioning BOP that then use the new BOP to cut off the flow? My understanding of the BOP is that it can cut directly through the riser.

I'm going with Gorilla glue. Or do they make underwater duck-tape?

Didn't the rig sink? I'm sure it's a mangled mess down there...

you misunderstood. the riser never goes thru the bop. it's the pipe that is attached to the bop.

The current administration is already on record as supporting expanded offshore drilling. This is nothing but a PR disaster for them too.
People on the Gulf Coast may change their minds about offshore drilling, but until people across the country change their habits, we'll still be producing in the Gulf.

I see. I just seems like there should be some way to use the ROVs to cut through the pipe and weld a patch of some description. Obviously, I have no f'n clue what I am talking about.

Oil companies have F'ed over Louisiana for generations. Feds don't give a shite. Some local guy should arrest a BP higher up just for shock value. Maybe waterboard him. Videotape it and then give it to CNN. Also, I'm not kidding.

i'll make it simple. imagine your water hose is pouring out of an open end and it also is cut in two different places. can you put some duct tape on the open end? no. you will try your damndest to turn the spout off.

You going on record saying that the current administration will try to exploit this travesty?

I understand that people are frustrated over this oil spill and over the years oil companies have done things that hurt the coastlines of La. However, those same oil companies provided many jobs for people all along the gulf coast. There aren't many people who live anywhere along the gulf coast who can't say that they don't someone who works either directly for an oil company or an oil and gas related business.
Many are pissed at BP and they aren't the only ones involved in this mess.

60 days to get DD3 on locale and P&A.

in a perfect world, yes. but, with that much sliding, i would say more like 5 mos.

I'd be willing to bet lots of money they use rotary steerable for this job.

What if I disconnect the leaky garden hose, screw the nozzle directly on the faucet, and then close the nozzle?
I think that's what he's asking.

When all the smoke clears, how will this compair to the Exxon Valdez?

in this scenario, there is no "nozzle". just an open end.
