I agree with basically everything you said except

this could spell the end of the days of offshore drilling in the US,

this wont happen

Probably true...I bet we will see a drastic downturn in the amount of new drilling however. The regulation that will be in place will make it almost cost prohibitive. I would imagine that the licensing requirements simply from a time standpoint will be insane as well.

Look, I am not trying to be a dramaking here, I just have a pretty good understanding of government regulatory schemes and this is a regulatory schemer's wet dream.

That's been happening for the past 2 years. Why do you think so many of the semi's and drill ships are going to Mexico and overseas?

So this will have no effect on that trend?

Perhaps that will be a catalyst for more onshore drilling and exploration. The horizontal/shale plays really got it moving again in recent years, and this could accelerate it even more. Just an economic theory...

I think it will slow things down a bit while all the co's in the GOM re-evaluate there own policies and procedures and I'm sure there will be new rules and regs that are handed down, but the bottom line is, this country needs the oil.

There will be changes and they will be for the best, but drilling will never cease in the GOM, it just wont happen. It cant.

Semi-Substantiated Rumor: BP is not going to be able to shut the BOP. Drilling relief well is last option(besides crazy suction sombrero). 60 days to get DD3 on locale and P&A. No good news.

I think you and I agree on much more than we disagree with regards to this topic...however, I think you are grossly underestimating what the politicians will do when they get involved in this situation.

Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel said it best, never waste a good crisis.
