With all of the Government oversight in BPs command center, is it reasonable to suspect that they might have known if BP was misleading/lying to the public?

I personally think the problem here is a steep learning curve. Unless you have been immersed in it, the oilfield lingo alone is a pretty high barrier to entry. I remember someone asking me why on earth they would use string (a drill string) is an oil well. They thought twine, where people who know the language would think a drill pipe.

So it is natural that people, and probably government official, would easily get confused.

Energy Secretary Chu Oversees “Top Kill” Procedure at BP Command Center

At the request of President Obama, Secretary Chu has been at BP’s Command Center in Houston monitoring the ongoing “top kill” attempt—analyzing the data in real time and helping to develop strategies to give it the best chances of success. In the days leading up to the “top kill” attempt, Secretary Chu and his team of National Laboratory scientists provided expert advice and technical support to test the assumptions behind BP’s work and to offer analytical rigor.

Judge,

sounds good. we'll keep this discussion to the technical aspects. I'll start a new thread each time I have something to say.

Obviously I don't mean that. But if you want to start a thread on the politics of this, well, I think that would be a pretty elegant solution.

But I'm just one man. If the moderators and most of those on this thread want to talk politics, well, I understand getting outvoted.

And, in fairness to you tigerbtn and you hamburglar, I guess I have occasionally vented politics on this board. So say what you have to say, I guess. It's just that the technical stuff interests me more than the politics.

But he's got a team of expert scientists assisting him.

In all seriousness, you would think the Dept of Interior or some other government agency would have knowledgeable people in the command post.

I think this was a fail as of yesterday, they were waiting for the stock market to close and they also wanted to wait a little extra to make it not look suspicious.

"What's chu name?"
"Chu."
"Dat's what i been aksing you, what's chu name?"

That could go on for a while.

And BP is hiding the little space aliens who crashed at Area 51.

You people are clueless with all these crazy ideas. BP could have just waited a couple of days longer to start since they knew it was going to fail.. right. I guess they couldn't caculate when the weekend was going to get here.

I have a crazy idea. Maybe they tried and came close but couldn't pull it out. Never mind, that is probably a bit to radical.

Well I wouldn't say they "mislead or lied" because they never said it worked. However they could be 99.9% sure its not gonna work on Thursday and continue to stop and start and push the announcement of failure into the weekend.

It is possible to delay the inevitable.

Somebody can correct me if my memory is inaccurate but I seem to remember reading where BP ssid the odds of Top Kill succeeding were in the 60+ percent range.

They should have said the chance of failure was in the 60% to 70% range.
