good question...why not have 10 backups?
Or has anyone in the control room thought that once they get to a certain point with the saw, that the riser may just pinch the saw much like a tree pinching a chain saw...do they have a plan?

hey seriously need to hire a group of 10 year old kids to operate these things.
I saw one ROV operator try no less than 7 times to hook a tow rope to a hook.
Guarandamntee you a kid would have done it in 2 tries max.
Ease up there, Tex. Your kid hasn't been on a boat for 37 days with the entire world and the entire United States government looking over his shoulder, facing possible criminal charges if he makes a wrong move.
I have watched most of what these guys have done, and it has been amazing. Also, as someone else pointed out, keep in mind that there is a lag time. These boys have to react to what is going on down there even though they are seeing what happened a few seconds ago.
It's easy to armchair quarterback, folks, but keep in mind that what they are doing down there is immensely difficult.
And if you feel like attacking the ROV jocks, well you can just kiss

You don't know that it isn't. They probably don't want two saws in the water -- one going up and one going down -- at the same time for fear of collision. Sure, it is frustrating. But think how we would feel if the crashed those saws together and had to send in to the beach for another one.
With everything at stake in terms of the environmental damage.....why not have a backup saw down there just off to the side....I'm sure they have the technology to pull that off.

Dude, seriously. Ease up.

They have backup saws.
CNN: Just looked... it took all of 1 minute for the dick to say something stupid. He wanted to know why they haven't been sucking oil up through the chock and kill lines all along... since the very beginning. And this is where the public gets their information.

Because you don't want a saw sitting in the muck with iron shavings and dried drilling mud flying around.

Dude, seriously. Ease up.
Don't get your panies in a wad protecting the rov jocks.......not questioning them...but questioning whether anyone else is asking the right questions.

Did you guys just see that? They turned the saw on and the pulleys on the left side spun but the ones on the right didn't. That would seem to indicate a broken wire right?

You sound like the type of people BP hires .... just don't ask tough questions.

That would make a lot of sense.
Hey munchman, let me save you some trouble: "Why did those stupid morons who are not really as smart as I am have another wire sitting down in the mud so they could just thread it in with the ROV, even though the ROV drivers could not find their a__ with a handful of fishhooks?"
Because stuff breaks that you can't fix on the bottom of the ocean, that's why.

Ease up there, Tex
Give those 10 year olds a few hours to practice and they'd have that fricker buttoned up in no time.

why on earth would there be lag time? we're only talking about a mile, not light years. i would be dumbfounded if there really is lag time unless i'm completely missing something.

I really love people "just asking questions" that are essentially "why in the hell aren't any of these people as smart as me sitting here on Tigerdroppings?" The ultimate back-seat driving. To listen to some of these "questions" you'd swear these guys were getting off on not being able to fix the thing. I get the anger at the situation, but I have to believe these guys working this situation are doing everything they know to stop this. Then again, there are people who think the moon landing was staged, so what do I know?

what was that smoking rod looking thing that ROV was carrying toward the plume?

Don't know. Just telling you what some other people, who have proven knowledgable on other matters, have posted.
