My uncle is a captain for Chouest and said they covered 50 square miles this week without finding one drop of recoverable oil. If the media can post pictures of these huge sheens why can't the let the response vessels have the coordinates

Rip currents, wind, and dispersants make it hard to find in such a large Gulf there has been an estimated amount of oil leaked in the hundreds of millions of gallons, plenty to skim for months even years to come

Exactly, It's not like the Gulf is a still lake! All the elements involved combine to shred the large slicks. SOme of the oil floats under the surface also.

Trust me, the oil is still in the water and did NOT disappear forever. It will turn up.

Sounds like they need a few coast guard helicopters to spot the oil and send in the skimmers.

Actually - It sounds like whoever manages to put together an oil-skimming/vacuuming submarine is going to be filthy rich.

I wouldn't be so sure this is a good thing - where did all that oil go?

Oil is not that stable in a large, warm, mixing water system.

Where did the oil go. Evaporation and being eaten by bacteria is where the vast majority of has gone.

Because it does little good to give the coordinates to where the oil was three weeks ago. That is probably when all those pictures were taken.

The problem is trying to find streams of the burnable oil. The stuff that has had dispersant put on it ("the brighter "red" looking stuff). The previous Friday brought in some bad weather and the water was really choppy through about Monday night. Hard to find it in that type of water and that breaks up the streams. Also they've been running seismographic operations around the site... so most of the skimming crews were kept at a 10 mile radius. When the vessels were closer before the cap was put on... naturally it was easier to find the oil. But now and especially with some possible tropical weather it's going to be spread very far.

In the past 4 months ive seen enough oil to maybe fill a swimming pool. I fly most of Breton Sound and Main Pass 2-3 times a week.

From the beginning this was either going to be a crushing blow to the oil industry or a crushing blow to alarmist environmentalism.
Looks like the latter now. Thank God.

They need to be skimming in Mobile Bay...there appeared to be a lot of oil in the water in the bay last week.

No matter the outcome this has already had a crushing blow on the oil industry.

Long term could crush oil industry, not the spill itself actually, but new rules and regulations to come out of this....oil companies are going to have to decide pretty soon if they want to operate in the deepwater Gulf, and a lot are going to have to get out - only the really big boys will be able to afford the costs and the risks.

This administration (it's not BP but rather BO) is going to run a lot of companies out of the Gulf, and we will lose possibly thousands of jobs - at this point, I don't know that this can be salvaged in time.
