Gorillas shouldn't be in zoos. Have you ever noticed how depressed they look when you see them there? They're not dumb like the giraffes

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. This wild animal should know better than to step to humans. To dumb as a species to understand that? Evolve or get dealt with. Darwin. Zoo keepers made sure that wild beast won't ever do that shite again. Right decision was made without question.

Jack Hannah is on MSNBC right now. They've asked him about what the zoo should have done. Here's a breakdown of what he's saying.

1. They were right to kill the animal

2. Tranquilizers are not an option as they take 5-10 minutes to take effect.

3. Even if it did not look like the gorilla was going to harm a child, the gorilla could have killed him at any second. It's still a wild animal.

4. No enclosure is ever 100% safe.

Now they're talking to a director of the Miami Zoo. He's saying its standard for zoos to have teams ready to put down (shoot) dangerous animals at a moments notice. He even said they have a team of shooters at the Miami Zoo who train on the range monthly to be proficient at killing dangerous animals. And again, when human life is in danger, tranquilizers are not an option due to how long it takes for them to take effect.

Thanks for bringing some moral sanity and clarity to this thread.

As I said in the OP, the zoo absolutely did the right thing. What kind of culture have we become that cannot instantly see that you don't place the value of an animal before that of a child?

Ever how the child got in or why the parents weren't watching their child closely enough are not going to be resolved real-time at the endangerment of the child.

I like animals and enjoys zoos. Wild animals that most of us would never see in in their native habitats we get to see in zoos. Within the last decade or so I've been to Audubon, Houston, Brevard Co. FL, and Busch Gardens Tampa zoos. I recall seeing signs about not feeding or agitating or climbing but nothing to the effect that my children are at risk in this zoo of being eaten by the animals. Dare not take your eyes of them at any time.

If the zookeepers thought there was any reasonable likelihood that a small child could overcome their barriers then they would never allow the child into the exhibit to begin with. And as far as I know, they don't have some maximum child:guardian ratio limit. School groups with dozens of kids chaperoned at best with 2:1 ratios go on field trips to zoos every year. My guess is that in this day, many of these children have at best one parent who may or may not be accompanying them to the zoo.

As parents, IDK if it's even possible to bring-up children in any normal sense and protect them from all accidents/incidents. Yet, there are posters in this thread that act as if any harm that comes to a child is due to parental negligence of the first order.

Again, props to the zoo for having a plan and executing it so a child wasn't killed.

This pisses me off more than anything. Whoever had the bright idea to shoot the Gorilla needs his arse kicked. Should have shot the dumb arse parents. Why not sedate the gorilla???

Obviously, you didn't read the link in the OP and you probably didn't view any of the videos either.

How many times does it have to be posted?

SEDATING THE GORILLA WAS NOT A VIABLE OTION BECAUSE IT TAKES TOO LONG FOR IT TO HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE GORILLA.

The gorilla can kill in just one move, literally like 2 seconds. A tranquilizer will take as much as 10 minutes to have any effect on it.

m definitely against aquariums. And I am kinda against zoos. I am all for wildlife conservation in the ma h forms it takes. But in many cases, the state we keep these animals in is immoral. Zoos should bring glory to the animals, and too many of them reduce the animals to "amusement".

Without zoos people would not realize or care what an elephant or a gorilla were, and there would never have been wildlife conservation. EVER.

Hard to take a stand for something you've never seen. Now we have TV and. Discovery channel. Years ago this wasn't the case. Zoos perform a function of rehabilitating SOME animals that would have probably died anyway. Animals injured or weak for whatever reason. Prime example are Albino Alligators. They'd starve in the wild. Many zoos have one. We get to see an alligator up close? Win-win.

If zoos we're going out and darting and capturing alpha animals in their prime from the plains of Africa I could see a problem. But to my knowledge this ain't the case.

Sucks but it's the only move the zoo could make. Killing that gorilla protected the child and the rest of the zoo.

It seems like they would have a tranquilizer dart gun to knock an animal out.

From the article.....

He said the gorilla didn’t appear to be attacking the child, but the animal was “extremely strong” in an agitated situation. Maynard added that tranquilizing the gorilla wouldn’t have knocked it out immediately, leaving the boy in worse danger.

It would've probably pissed him off enough to start swinging and the boy would still be in its path. He would go ape shite for a few seconds and that would be enough to seriously injure and/or kill the boy.

According to Jack Hannah (who's forgot more about animals than any of us will ever know) it takes 5-10 minutes for it to take effect. The ape could have torn him to bloody shreds in that time. He agreed that killing the animal was the only option. I'll take his word for it.

wasn't the little dumb arse in there for 10 minutes before they shot it? it didn't kill him in those 10 minutes and from the videos i saw from witnesses, it looked like the gorilla had zero intentions of harming the child.

I can't believe not a one motherfricker jumped in there to help that kid. Yes the parents are assholes for letting their kid fall in there but if you are a spectator you have to go in.
