Somebody explain the rationale for this:

quote:

Three Democrat senators have introduced a bill that would reform the U.S. Department of Agriculture and create a system of land grants to transfer millions of acres to Black farmers at no charge.

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., the lead sponsor of the bill, tweeted Tuesday, "I'm proud to team up with @ewarren and @SenGillibrand to introduce the Justice for Black Farmers Act. We need to balance the scales after decades of systemic racism within @USDA have harmed Black farmers."

The bill was announced on Nov. 19 by Booker, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and is set to be released on Nov. 30.

Booker told Mother Jones the bill aims to reverse the "destructive forces that were unleashed upon Black farmers over the past century — one of the dark corners of shame in American history." A new USDA agency called the Equitable Land Access Service would buy agricultural land from willing sellers and "convey grants of that land to eligible Black individuals at no cost to the eligible Black individuals," the bill states.

No love from Mr. Booker regarding Hispanic and Asian farmers? Where's the equality in that?

So current landowners will be able to name their price and sell land that they don't need?

I’ll post the same thing I posted on the Poli Board

These arse hats need to actually visit where some of the places that are a result of 40 acres and mule and the New Deal.

I farm like 3 miles from one. It’s the most fricked up shite ever. It’s a couple thousand acres of good land, but it doesn’t drain worth a shite because it’s chopped up amongst hundreds of landowners that can’t afford land improvements, so they’re slowly selling it back to either the the last couple of black farms left or descendants of the original white landowners, who then turn around and rent it to those last couple of black farmers that want to farm it.

That's just part of it ($80 BILLION).

I looked through PART of the bill and funding appropriations were at $105,800,000,000 (almost 106 BILLION) with no costs added for things like direct operating loans (at no interest for 7 years and no payments for 24 months), home mortgage loans to build homes on the newly acquired property, or the salaries for the commission members (lifetime appointments) and their subordinate employees.

It'll be a mess and a gigantic waste. I believe there has been a reduction down from 32 million farmers in 1920 down to 2.6 million farmers today in the United States.

I don't imagine HUGE numbers of ANY RACE wanting to operate a farm these days.

There is a reason there is the trope of kids wanting to leave the farm; it's not fun or easy. I doubt it'll be a growth industry in today's society.

Why can't I get some land to start a farm?

What did I do wrong that I can't get any, while others can?

I would seriously like my free land from when my ancestors were kicked out of Nova Scotia during The Great Expulsion.

Why are blacks getting free land when others are not?

This "bill" is literally the exact definition of racism.

You can make the argue that it covers EVERYONE.

Their formatting - sorry in advance:

quote:

5 (2) SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED FARMER OR
6 RANCHER.—The term ‘‘socially disadvantaged farm
7 er or rancher’’ means a farmer or rancher who is a
8 member of a socially disadvantaged group.

I guess that might be a limiting requirement. . .

quote:

9 (3) SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED GROUP.—The
10 term ‘‘socially disadvantaged group’’ means a group
11 whose members have been subjected to racial or eth
12 nic prejudice because of their identity as members of
13 a group without regard to their individual qualities

There is no language limiting that determination in terms of time frame or geographic region.

So what about white farmers in Zimbabwe? They were forced off their land due to racial prejudice. The plain language of the bill leads me to think that white people are now eligible for the bill.

One could argue that the only limitation is that the person has to BE a rancher or farmer.

I think this just shows that this proposal was poorly conceived and crafted.

Problem is that previous bills have been tweaked so that you don’t have to be a farmer, just claim you attempted and were dissuaded from doing so.

Look up “Pigford”, which was basically a handout program for tons of blacks who claimed they “attempted to farm” between the dates in question.
