You’re about to back out of your parking lot, a car honks for you to move, what do you do?

Do you leave or decide to stay just to piss off the driver? I did the latter the few times this happened to me at LSU when I had good parking at Tiger Stadium when I went to campus for class.

Just ignore and do your thing at normal pace. I get why people honk sometimes. Seen too many people about to back out and then decide to check phone, etc... unaware of someone waiting to park. Seems kind of petty to just sit there on purpose after they honk.

I have no problem with being petty though, especially if I’m not in a rush to go anywhere.

When I had a dude literally follow me around the parking lot as I walked to my car so he can take my spot, I just decided to go back to campus and study at Middleton.

There are still open spots, but they’re a bit further away and of course they’re too good to walk, even when it’s not raining and warm outside

I just park in the back of the lot among all the empty spaces. That way I can avoid all of this.

They never honk at me because I don't frick around. I get in the car and am backing out in a few seconds.

But science shows that many people will dick around if someone is waiting on the space.

quote:

Three studies showed that drivers leaving a public parking space are territorial even when such behavior is contrary to their goal of leaving.

In Study 1 (observations of 200 departing cars), intruded-upon drivers took longer to leave than nonintruded-upon drivers.

In Study 2, an experiment involving 240 drivers in which level of intrusion and status of intruder were manipulated, drivers took longer to leave when another car was present and when the intruder honked.

Males left significantly sooner when intruded upon by a higher rather than lower status car, whereas females' departure times did not differ as a function of the status of the car.

Same. I had a guy laying on his horn for me to leave my parking spot at Target once years ago. Even though there were plenty of spots 20 feet away.

I was already in a bad mood that day...so I just decided to get out my car and go back inside for some Starbucks. Seeing the guys face as I did that was worth it

I'll just sit there. Might get out and ask if they need help finding a parking spot.

If you're too lazy to park in a spot further from the building and walk, I'm not going to enable you.

I use to go to lunch with a bunch of juvenile co-workers and whoever's turn it was to drive, the front seat passenger would lean over and lay on the horn.

Nothing as a driver you can do at that point except enjoy the pissed off looks and flipped birds.

I back into parking spots so I usually just wave at them if they honk at me then put my head down and make a thread on TD

Unless it’s just super busy, I will sit there all day.

Most of the time, say at the grocery store, I will organize my bags, get situated, and get caught up on emails/texts before pulling off. Had someone honk at me once and I just cut off the engine. They squealed out all pissy and ended up making two more circles and saved themselves maybe 5 yards of walking.

I can’t stand people that hold everyone up trying to troll parking lots to get 5 steps closer to the door.
