My ancestors were Volga Germans. Ethnic Germans encountered to immigrate to Russia to farm. They left for the US in early 1930’s.

Thousands of Volga Germans that remained in Russia ended up dying the gulags during WWII.

So had they stayed 5 years or later and my family was likely toast.

My family is direct descendants of French royalty. I do like ugly antiques and have pasty white skin so it checks out.

Heard stories of old census activity where the people, could, say their names but not spell the names. Therefore the written names were subject to the influence of the census taker at the time. If the resulting name could be spelled slightly different and this may be why we see names such as Trosclares, Trosclairs, Troxclairs,etc......and they are related.

My great-grandfather was a sheriff in another state and at the same time was the leading moonshiner in that county during prohibition.

Apparently this guy is my relative.

My Great- Grandfather’s grandfather was a Major in the civil war. He was sent to round up deserters and was murdered by one of them in Ellisville, MS. The house (known as The Deason Home) he was murdered in claims to be haunted and has ghost tours..

After the civil war and as a reward for bravery under fire, my grandfather’s grandpaw was sent to a western frontier fort.

It was pretty much deserted but he passed the time playing with a wolf cub and some drunken Indians.

According to family legend, he hooked up with a white woman that had been living with the Indians for years and retired from the military shortly thereafter.

The experiences made him so mean, my great grandpaw and his brother ran away at 12 and 13 to Monroe LA and would never talk about him.

Note: This is not the plantation owning side of the family.

Michael Mckean (spinal tap fame) is a 3rd cousin.

Great great uncle Edmond left his house to the city of Minden to be used as a library and it’s still the library today, but it has been expanded.

Cool story bro.

His killer Newton Knight not only was never charged but actually later served as a US Marshal during reconstruction, despite leading a group that murdered many other people.

My grandmother grew up working on a farm with her mom and dad, who were dirt poor sharecroppers.

My grandfather left home at 14 during the Great Depression looking for work to help his father, a coal miner, support their family.

Neither had a college education, but they worked their asses off to create a great life for themselves and their children.

No welfare, no government subsidy, no affirmative action. Just old fashion determination and self discipline.

My wife's grandfather from many generations up is the one who introduced the dice game of craps to the United States from Europe. He is buried in St. Louis Cathedral. Too bad she does not get royalties from that.

Related to Walter Hagen on my Mom’s side. Grandpa used to have one of his putters. He married a woman 30 years younger, family speculated she sold it for $5 at a garage sale...

My dad got caught running moonshine. Judge gave him a choice of prison or joining the Army. He became a B 25 waist gunner. He saw a notice he could get $7 more a month if he volunteered for jump school. Ultimately wound up riding a glider in on D-Day.
He never talked about the war. He just always told me to be careful about volunteering for anything.
