“I'm very gullible when it comes to my own words. I believe everything I say, though I know I'm a liar.”
- Lord of Light

“I don’t believe in fairy tales, or sermons, or stories about money.”
- True Grit

“Out of war peace gains fresh stability, but to refuse to abandon repose for war is not so sure a method of avoiding danger.”
- Archidamus, The History

“No person can disobey reason, without giving up his claim to be a rational creature.”
- Swift

“It is a common defect of men in fair weather to take no thought of storms.”
- The Prince

“In order to make a man covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to obtain.”
- Life on the Mississippi

and finally

“My friends,

I had not intended to discuss this controversial subject at this particular time. However, I want you to know that I do not shun controversy. On the contrary, I will take a stand on any issue at any time, regardless of how fraught with controversy it might be. You have asked me how I feel about whiskey. All right, here is how I feel about whiskey.

If when you say whiskey you mean the devil’s brew, the poison scourge, the bloody monster, that defiles innocence, dethrones reason, destroys the home, creates misery and poverty, yea, literally takes the bread from the mouths of little children; if you mean the evil drink that topples the Christian man and woman from the pinnacle of righteous, gracious living into the bottomless pit of degradation, and despair, and shame and helplessness, and hopelessness, then certainly I am against it.

But;

If when you say whiskey you mean the oil of conversation, the philosophic wine, the ale that is consumed when good fellows get together, that puts a song in their hearts and laughter on their lips, and the warm glow of contentment in their eyes; if you mean Christmas cheer, if you mean the stimulating drink that puts the spring in the old gentleman’s step on a frosty, crispy morning; if you mean the drink which enables a man to magnify his joy, and his happiness, and to forget, if only for a little while, life’s great tragedies, and heartaches, and sorrows; if you mean that drink, the sale of which pours into our treasuries untold millions of dollars, which are used to provide tender care for our little crippled children, our blind, our deaf, our dumb, our pitiful aged and infirm; to build highways and hospitals and schools, then certainly I am for it.

This is my stand. I will not retreat from it. I will not compromise.”

"We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender..." - Winston Churchill, June 4, 1940

Applicable to any facet of life, the message is simple - never give up; never surrender.

"What if a demon were to creep after you one night, in your loneliest loneliness, and say, 'This life which you live must be lived by you once again and innumerable times more; and every pain and joy and thought and sigh must come again to you, all in the same sequence. The eternal hourglass will again and again be turned and you with it, dust of the dust!' Would you throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse that demon? Or would you answer, 'Never have I heard anything more divine'?"

I know as an LSU fan what those Florida teams did to us, but I still really enjoy this quote. When reporters criticized Spurrier about running up the score on teams:

"What am I supposed to do? Tell them not to score?"

A war is never avoided. It is only deferred to one’s own disadvantage.
- The Prince

Men must either be cajoled or crushed; for they will revenge themselves for slight wrongs, while for grave ones they cannot.
- The Prince

As I grow older I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do.
- Andrew Carnegie

Only the dead have seen the end of war.
- Plato

I have spent most of my life worrying about things that have never happened.
- Mark Twain

In religion and politics, people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second hand, and without examination.
- Mark Twain

A stupid man's report of what a clever man says can never be accurate, because he unconsciously translates what he hears into something he can understand.
- Bertrand Russell, A History of Western Philosophy

Stupidity cannot be cured. Stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence is death. There is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.
