I agree Honeycrisp is the best apple.

Macintosh, while softer and slghtly mealy, have a great taste as well.

Fuji is a nice firm Apple with okay taste. Gala's are similar, but not as firm.

Honeycrisp. Ambrosia if I can't find honeycrisp. I tried to get into jazz but couldn't pull it off.

That's the truth. I used to avoid apples because I associated them with red delicious. Most deceitful name in the business.

Planet Money has a good podcast about how the HoneyCrisp was developed and the legal protections associated with it and similar trademark and club-protected apple varieties.

It explores "how we got from mealy, nasty apples to apples that actually taste delicious." LINK

Here is a similar NPR print article, but the podcast is better. LINK

I haven't heard the podcast. But I'm pretty sure the answer is luck and grafting.

Honeycrisp is the GOAT. Perfect balance of acidity and juicy sweetness with just the right consistency. I like some of the other related varieties too.

Obviously Red Delicious is peasant-tier. So mealy and stale.
