Why are all you acting like the only people who get DUIs are broke and busted losers? Many of them are housewives, executives and business people who have no trouble getting another job after serving their time. Many have assets that will be forfeited to pay the child support.

The police actually prefer to give affluent people DWIs because they can afford to pay the fines. Which is really what its all about anyways.

Tons of day drinking housewives getting DUIs after tennis or golf. Think they park right outside the known lunch/brunch spots. I agree they prefer affluent people DUIs.

After release, they will be required to pay back child support plus interest.

Emotional thinking devoid of logic. The law is either ridiculous or far too limited, there is no reason to like it as is.

Do kids of parents killed by someone texting while driving also need child support?

What about killed by someone that fell asleep while driving?

Someone that ran a red light?

Someone speeding?

After this, what is the argument for any negligent act that results in the killing of parents to not result in paying child support?

I think those are all fair questions but, specifically within the context of the new law, is your overarching point that the law is "either ridiculous or far too limited", or that the specific child support-related consequences are ridiculous/too limited?

I.e. do you have issue with the new law having the stiff consequences or is your issue that those same consequences aren't also assigned to the other acts you've described as negligent?

It's tough to see a world in which we are able to pass meaningful legislature when we're unable to measure merits of a proposal on standalone value because we're so caught up in viewing them through the lens of what-aboutisms.

I won't disagree that the stiff penalties could also be assigned to some of the violations you mentioned but, to me, that isn't reason to not pass this new law specifically related to intoxicated manslaughter.

And a seatbelt, while inconvenient, isn't the same as an interlock system

Obviously, right now it isn't, but I have read about potential technologies where steering wheels could detect alcohol in hand sweat, so it wouldn't even be inconvenient if that became a reality.

Probably a moot point, anyway, with driverless vehichles on the cusp of being more widespread in the next 10-15 years.

You’re always going to have the crowd that are clearly drinkers that argue this point, just like you have the other side that think if you have a drink at dinner you’re killing 5 people on your way home. It’s a middle ground. Be responsible while you’re out. If it’s three drinks over a couple hours…that’s fair.

The insurance companies and the government will still find a way to frick us over even after accidents and deaths drop to nearly zero.

Going to be hard to collect on someone who is in jail or can't find a job.

I get it, good intent, but how is someone likely to be going to jail going to pay child support?

If they have assets, 401K etc. Make a stupid decision that kills someone's mom or dad, I don't have much sympathy for you.

1000%

I got one over the summer. It’s not something I’m proud of by any means but they pulled someone over that was not driving erratic. Was going well within the speed limit. The only thing that he observed me doing was failure to use a turn signal once. Then pulls me over in front of my house.

I live within very close proximity to bars and restaurants. There is an element that comes out late at night that I would say is much more destructive than anything I would do. They drink on the streets. Crowd the roads. Burn outs in vehicles etc. Why the frick aren’t the police stopping these people when they drive because I know damn well you could pull them over for some hen house shite like I was.

Nope the only people consistently getting them I see are all middle aged white guys who are financially established.

Furthermore, recently I was watching one of these court shows that will show you the entire dash/body cam and follows the case to court rulings etc. Well I’ll be damned. Had I been sober and tried to out run the police that night I might be looking at lesser fines and penalties than what I got for a dui.
