re: You never realize how terrible living in Louisiana was until you go back home.

Louisiana will always be home, but I can't imagine living there. I enjoy my time when I come back and there are some things I really miss about Acadiana.
I miss the food first and foremost. Cajun and Creole cuisine can be found but it's just not the same. There are days when I'd kill for a link of boudin. Funny how something you can find at every corner becomes so iconic when you live elsewhere.
If there was ever a case study written for how not to do infrastructure and urban development then Lafayette is it. Greater Tampa has millions of people and is far easier to negotiate. It's also difficult to watch the boom or bust cycles as the area is so tied to the oil industry. I just don't see much economic opportunity there unless you are tied to the industry.

A little piece of me dies every time I get off the plane at a Louisiana airport. All the obesity and general trashiness is immediately on display. It is a sad state of affairs there, but most will never leave as generations before them haven't

I read the Jackson Hole newspaper online. This is a place that by any reasonable standard is one of the very best locations to live in the United States, if not the world. And the paper is full of drugs, burglaries, domestic violence, DWI arrests, etc. Any place is what you make of it. You can be happy or miserable. It's all up to you.

This is a bit of a dramatic response. Arkansas, West Virginia and Mississippi rank above Louisiana in terms of the obese population... Which is nothing to brag about.. at all, but you make it sound like La is the obese capital of the world.
And as long as its politics as usual, it will always be the same, but it has its upsides. You make it sounds like the most depressing place ever.

100% agree. Left Baton Rouge in 2008 and moved to Dallas. Got the "homesick: bullshite and moved back to BR in 2012. WORST fricking decision I have ever made. Destroyed me financially. Back in Dallas now and damn happy.

I love living in LA and am very well traveled. But man is this true. So many times I've flown out to beautiful places with not obese and stinky people to fly back into LA and be disappointed.

Order some online from Best Stop.
The only two things I miss from the lafayette area are boudin and crawfish. Thankfully I can get them delivered to my house. Other than that, there is nothing about it I miss.

Coming from Boulder, it really is. The other states you mentioned have the same affect on me too, but WV has the gorge so I dig going there

I'm beginning to agree on this as well. Especially after the way Dupont posts towards me. Very similar to CRev.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner. BR was and will always be "home". I love the food and the spirit of S. LA folks. But there is a lot of poor, trash and ignorance. When I go a Publix here in Naples, the bag boy says "Ma'am, may I carry your bags to your car for you?" The checkout lady is an elderly grandmother who is just...nice. In BR, you deal with mean people, so much welfare, poverty and ignorance. I grew up on the wrong side of BR and saw the ghetto first hand. LA has its features and they are amazing. I haven't been back to visit in 2 years, and unless it's for an LSU game or to introduce someone to NOLA, not sure why I would go back.

"We don't want your kind here"
Louisiana folk love defending mediocrity. The state could be so much better than what people are use to, but at least the gumbo is good.

DC Public Transportation?
Like the Metro, that's running when it's not broken down or on fire?
How about that DC City Council, that's the epitome of integrity and reason.
How much do you pay in rent or a mortgage?
How much do you pay to park your car, or do you have street parking where you worry about it getting burgled?
How often have you been towed? Have you ever been towed because the "No Parking" sign was blocked by a giant dumpster, and when you provided photo proof were still denied?
Aren't all of those people so friendly up there? Especially those metro workers who are always so helpful when your card doesn't work, or if you ask for help.
I also love the schizophrenics that perform karate moves in front of tourist attractions and in the middle of busy intersections.
I love visiting DC but no way I could live there.
Louisiana is far from perfect. But please don't try and paint DC as some sort of paradise. I have a kid who's lived up there for 10 years, and he/she can't wait to move home.
