Regardless if I'm working in an office or working from home, I shut off at 430 when it's time for daycare pickup. Your emergency doesn't matter to me. Call me between 8:30 and 4:30. Otherwise, frick all the way off

I’ve always worked in an office and often had to work long hours during busy times of the year. Of course, no overtime pay but overall no complaints as my total compensation is worth it.

Cool story, but that didn’t address the original post in any way.

I’m upper management and rarely get after hours calls. My boss and I do talk on the phone almost every Sunday getting our game plan down for the week ahead, but that’s about it. There are places that value your time away from the office.

They likely don’t work in customer facing positions and don’t realize that without happy customers, whatever position they’re in eventually ceases to exist.

Valid point.

Impossible. If you aren't missing your kids' birthday parties to do work for Mr. Chad Thundercock, you're getting passed up by someone who will. You got soft hands, boy.

"Should" does not matter and reeks of entitlement. "Fair" doesn't matter much either.

Why not.go find a job that allows you to work from home? Simple as that.

meh, if I've got something that I want to do or that I'm not going to miss it's as simple as that, it's a mutual respect and prioritizing, you do have to have to temper that though, if you make too much of a habit of it they my look for someone else that they feel doesn't have quite so many personal time "needs"

As a owner of a business, I have struggled with whether or not to ask the employees to come back. If I did, I would have a hybrid model where they would come in 2x/week.

This was the compromise at our office. The only thing is if we’re in a busy season (12 hours/day) we work from home everyday. Salary employee here

Being connected all of the time does have some downsides.

At my first job out of college I didn't even have a cell phone for probably a year or so. My boss could have left me a message on my answering machine if he needed me on Saturday. I wouldn't have given that dude my beeper number

Once I clocked out I would mute calls from my employer and not sign into my email until the next day. If they say you can't work from home, then there'd be no working from home. Companies shouldn't have it both ways.

No one has issues with that. As a manager you can't watch and instruct people at home. You can in an office to a certain extent.

"Abu in India" is just the stereotype.

It's absolutely true. I work for an Indian company now and absolutely amazed at how bad the hundreds of thousands of staff are, and I've been in the industry for almost 20 years. Stunningly bad workers.

For example, the day before a pitch meeting, I was reviewing a deck in a room with more than ten people in it, on a projector. I pointed out that this "consultant" had a single list, which combined both bullets and numbered items in the same list. This clearly needed to be changed before we showed it to a western client. I was the only one at the table that thought so. We showed it to the client the next day, and this was a $90,000,000 bid.

Quality control sucks, expect them to have an extreme lack of proactivity and to be very passive in getting work done, etc.

If you were told working from home was no longer allowed, how would you feel about receiving work requests after business hours? I find it hypocritical that a company would tell you working from home is not an option while sending work requests outside of normal business hours and expecting employees to respond quickly.

There is no thinking outside the box, no "western" common sense, no logical conclusions. There is only black in white instructions that you repeat constantly and occasionally are completely followed. But hey that P&L sure looks good.

On topic- it is harder to get new employees to pickup on instructional nuances or see exactly what they are doing wrong on zoom. It is easier to train in office.

Seems like a lot $11/hr McDonald workers in here. If any of my people refused to respond “after hours”they’d be gone in a heartbeat
