I'd make going back to the office miserable for the people who forced me to go back to the office, if it wasn't for a damn good reason
Not for the coworkers, but the bean counters

Which office should I go to, the one in Denver, Kansas City, Portland, Nashville, or LA?

If you were told working from home was no longer allowed, how would you feel about receiving work requests after business hours? I find it hypocritical that a company would tell you working from home is not an option while sending work requests outside of normal business hours and expecting employees to respond quickly.
I don't have to worry about this as we have employees all over the country, so it'll never happen anyway but tehcnically if they tried this, the company would legit fold 1 day later.
But back to the point, I am salaried but I do not take call and there is no expectation to work outside of office hours. So if I played the hypothetical, it still depends. I certainly would not be likely to do any work outside of hours at home. But it depends on factors like how much I like my job, am I looking to move up the ladder at this job, who made the request, etc.
That is kind of a funny thing thouth about companies wanting everyone back in the office. I am MUCH more likely to do something during off hours while WFH. If I'm in office, I'm not brining ing my laptop home every day. If I'm WFH, my entire set up is there, and if it's a quick and easy task, I may knock it out at 8pm from home(basically never happens in my job, just speaking hypothetically still) but if I have to be in office, that's never getting done if it requires my work laptop. So the company is losing efficiency

The day I realized that company’s don’t give a shite about you was a great day.
I’m productive and get my work done but I’ll never go back in an office unless it’s my only option.
It’s such a giant waste of time and most people who like it or require it are just extroverts that want to talk to people or they have an old school mindset that if you’re not at your desk you’re not working.
Then those same fricks are out taking smoke breaks and drinking coffee all day holding totally worthless meetings.
Since I’ve had kids I could give two fricks about urgently replying to bullshite requests after hours. It can wait.
We’re not saving the world and most jobs are bullshite.
I work to pay the bills. I don’t dislike it but I also will never put work before family.
Wasting 15 hours a week to drive in a car and sit in traffic to make some old school idiot happy vs making my kids breakfast? Yeah frick all that

At the end of my day work is over. I don’t respond to anything (texts, emails, office IMs) until the next morning.
I find it funny when people say things like the statement above but then question why they get passed over for promotions. Individuals with this mindset maybe make it to middle management, but not often have I seen employees with this mentality make it beyond that; save for nepotism.
Not saying there's anything wrong with it. Every organization has to have B players.

I see more hiring coming in former Soviet bloc countries like Poland or Slovakia. Those folks do good work, often speak English, and are about 3 to 1 in salary comparison to Americans.
And that is where the crew my brother, who works from home, manages is located.
"Abu in India" is just the stereotype.

agree with all of this, the people at work know they can count on me to get things done, if there's a problem I'm going to be part of the solution, it's not like I alter my time off and sit by the phone or walk around with an iPad, and it's not like they bug the hell out of me after hours all of the time with menial shite either, they just know that I can be counted on to punch through and get shite done, it also probably factored into why they had a position ready for me when I reached mandatory retirement age to stay with them and just change "titles" with a pretty cushy, civilized "retirement" gig

How many organizations have you worked for where the bolded text applies?

As a owner of a business, I have struggled with whether or not to ask the employees to come back. If I did, I would have a hybrid model where they would come in 2x/week. There are a lot of benefits to working out of the office for what we do, but they can also be successful working from home. Unless I see them slipping up, I don't have a problem with the WFH. I also know that by asking this, we would risk losing some employees and finding people that are qualified is harder than ever, not to mention the cost of replacing someone.
Regarding after hours work, those of you that say "once my day is over, i don't do anything for work until the next day", I want you to know that your upper management sees this. When it comes time for merit increases, if you think that this will not be in your supervisor's thoughts when giving out raises, then you are a lunatic.
I personally cannot see how some of you can just "turn it off". In my entire professional career, if I received something after-hours then I would look at it to see if it's something that I could take care of. If so, then that is one less thing I would have to do the following day.

Depends what type of person you are. Any person that’s aggressive and upwardly mobile should want to be in the office and also do any work that needs to be done, regardless of hours. I can’t imagine being a young professional and whining about after-hours phone calls or emails. A worker-bee that just wants to clock-in and clock-out, get their COL increase every year and progress little or not at all? Sure. Stay home and ignore emails at 5:01 pm. When I’m interviewing someone for a management role, if they ask what the hours are, they are out. And not because I take advantage of their time. It’s just a bad mindset.
Agreed with most of this until the last part. I’m a single Dad with young kids. I need to know what the expected hours are. That’s not to say I would never put in extra time but you have to at least know what the regular work hours are.

I don’t get many after hours requests anyway, so wouldn’t care. I also only work from home once or twice a month.

They likely don’t work in customer facing positions and don’t realize that without happy customers, whatever position they’re in eventually ceases to exist.
