Yea the cox mini boxes are free for the first year. No DVR or anything but they are actually pretty good.

I dont understand why people complain about the cost of cable/internet
I pay $140 a month for cable and internet.
I consider that a bargain for the many hours of entertainment it provides.

The problem with cablecards is that it's difficult to get them set up right with the cable company and then difficult to maintain. After several cablecards and several phone calls, I realize that they have no incentive to correctly support them.
I've been using one for years with my computer and Windows Media Center (RIP). I have six tuners to record programming. I can't find a comparable solution that is this afordable and works as well (I've tried). I hate that Microsoft quit supporting WMC. It was a product that they absolutely got right.

I recently moved apartments from one that included cable to one that did not. We transferred the internet, but the cable did not work until we called and signed up for cable. Cox had to "flip" a magic switch in order for the cable to come through.
Why wouldn't the cable have worked if we had the cable boxes with the cards?

The box is $3 a month to rent. Not much of a savings to buy your own.
To get all the channels, you have to have a "big" box which is $8.50/month without a DVR.

LoL. I managed a mid sized apartment in college by LSU. All the apartments came with basic cable. The cable guy pulled me aside and said for $20 cash a year per each apartment they could get the expanded channels. I collected $40 from each apartment every 6 months and pocketed the excess. It was awesome beer money.

well, I realized recently that I have actually been renting my tv remote from my cable company for the last ten years.
at $5 per month, that comes out to $600 so far!

Tivo gets it right and has built-in support for cable cards. I switched two years ago from WMC and couldn't be happier.

Aren't you paying like $15/mo for Tivo service, or did you buy their (device) lifetime sub? WMC is free.
Genuinely interested in whether Tivo supports these things I do with WMC...
Besides watching on my TV, can I have Tivo in a small always-on-top window on my PC? Can I control all operations with the keyboard? Can I watch at 1.5x speed with audio? Losing any of these would seriously cramp my style.
Can I hide channels and renumber and thus group the ones I keep in any way that I want? I don't even show channel numbers in the WMC guide. This is a very nice feature enabled my Mychannellogos whose absence aggravates the hell out of me when using the Cox mini-box.

Always love a way to get Channels.
