Updated Cord Cutting Thread | Compilation of Set-ups posted in post after OP
Posted by VermilionTiger

CHECK POST #1 AFTER OP FOR COMPILATION OF SET-UPS AND GUIDES FOR CORD CUTTING.
01. Digital Antenna: Your free access to local channels
Digital Antennas can allow you access to ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, CW, Etc for free. You can buy a digital antenna at Wal Mart or Best Buy. You can also make one with the instructions from this site: LINK
I personally went with the Folded Dipole Antenna.
02. Choosing your streaming device
There are a number of streaming devices you can choose from. Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, ROKU and ROKU Sticks, Apple TV, Chromecast, etc. The trick is to finding out which one will fit your needs.
Another popular add-on or application is KODI, which is only available for Fire TV and Fire Sticks. KODI is basically an add on that is downloaded/pushed to your streaming device, which then allows you to stream live TV and live sports (not all are HD quality, FYI). You can also stream TV shows and Movies on certain add-ons inside of KODI.
03. Streaming Subscriptions / Sling TV
Sling TV: For $20, you can get 20 channels (in the picture below) while paying on a month by month basis..zero contracts.
For $5 more, you can add ESPNNews, ESPNU, and the SEC Network (to watch LSU Baseball on SECN+).
Also, for a 3 month subscription, you can get a free ROKU2 (worth $70). Solid deal as I did that and gave it to my girlfriend.
Playstation Vue: Vue is now Nationwide. You DON'T need a Playstation 3 or 4 to have Vue. Vue is similar to SLING in that it's a live TV streaming service with no annual contract. You pay by month with the option of opting out whenever you want for no charge.

List of Stand-alone apps that support PS Vue Credentials
PS Vue is only available on:
01. PS4
02. PS3
03. Fire TV
04. Fire TV Stick
05. Chromecast via Iphone
**You MUST have options 01-04 to sign up for Vue

Setting up KODI on your Fire TV
01. Installing KODI
Updated way of installing KODI - NO Cpu needed - If you have any issues with this, let me know. I'll attempt to walk you through it or find a Youtube link that can better explain.
02. Once you've got it set up, it's time to get your add-ons.
Personally, I use Exodus, Phoenix, , castaway, & Sports Devil as my go to add-ons. To get most of these apps, you need to install the Fusion Repo onto your KODI application.
Installing Fusion
Once you're finished installing Fusion, go to:
Programs -> Add-On Install -> Video Add-ons
Click on the video Add-ons that you want. Exodus, Velocity, Phoenix, Castaway (Sports streaming), and others are on the lists.
03. Exodus Add-on and TRAKT.TV
Exodus is the next big thing for KODI, IMO. The library is building up and it's starting to gain a lot of support.
One thing I enjoy about Exodus is the integration of TRAKT.TV. You can set up a TRAKT acc and from your laptop or computer (possibly your phone?), you can add Movies and TV shows to your watch-list instead of having to search for them on your Fire TV. It also shows a display of most watched streams, indicating that they are likely the most successful ones.

Are there any DVRS that will record Sling as well as Antenna? The one thing I am worried about is losing the ability to record some cable channels. Sling would be enough for me but we record stuff on HGTV etc.

Can't answer that, but I do know that KODI has apps that have streams of older episodes on HGTV.

I encourage everyone to post their set-ups to help everyone out.
I'm going to go into detail on my set-up later on, although its the basic Digital Antenna, Fire TV, KODI set-up with Sling TV

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread since I'm moving into my first house in a few weeks and have just started to look into options for tv

I think I decided to go with the Nvidia Shield for my Kodi setup. I will post any info I can once I get it set up

I don't have this set up right now, but am very interested for a possible move in the next year. I'd really like to have them run Cat6 to every room so I can put an Apple TV/firetv wherever i want.
I'm thinking SlingTV + maybe the sports pack. And then I guess my only other question would be about local channels and how I would connect the antenna to all the cable lines. Put the antenna in the attic and just split it however many ways?

Would probably work. But for Sling TV, you can only have it running on one device at a time, unfortunately.

Once I remembered emulators were a thing, and found them available to Kodi...

I'm intrigued by the OTA antenna combined with Tivo and the mini boxes option. I'd only have to worry about coax to the main Tivo box and then get as many minis as I need and only need ethernet for those if I'm understanding correctly.
Anyone have a setup like that?
Although that seems like overkill for the few OTA channels I'd get.

it'll work if you're dropping a new, separate cable into each room just for the antenna. but unfortunately it will not work if you're trying to hook your antenna into the same cable that is already carrying your internet.

this tech bro said he had it figured it out, and i went to radio shack and bought these diplexers and tried for myself. doesn't work with broadband internet, but will work with satellite apparently.

Nope. Once you use your sling credentials to log-in to watchESPN, your SO will be kicked off
You can literally only use your sling credentials one at a time.
