Meh, an hour on the train in NE can get you to a few major world cities.

Each will be on a case by case basis. Your post gets confusing-where in town is the train station, how fast are you driving, etc
It really depends on where you consider yourself a resident of and if you are close enough to a metropolis to be considered a suburb.
I live 90 minutes from a big city but where I live is not affiliated with the city whatsoever.

I'm just trying to nail it down to a reasonable standard. He said "if you commute" - so if I lived in Connecticut and commuted to the city, I'm an hour on the train.
If I live in Lafayette and commute to Baton Rouge - that's an hour in the car.
Hell, make it a half an hour, but then it gets artificial as most people in the NE commute for more than 30 minutes - an hour would catch fully 75 percent of folks in those situations.
And, in L.A., an hour in the car might not be enough - so, it all may be artificial at the end of the day.

I think metro area is reasonable for cities, and if you live in a town that's in BFE, well that's what you have to deal with to get the billion.
It can take well over an hour by car to get from one side of houston to the other, but it's still all houston.
It takes less than that to get from Laffy to BR, but Laffy is a completely and separate town/city from BR.

Once we break the strict definition of "town" (and what if the person is really rural - do we make it County or Parish?) - I was just suggesting something like parameters. Isn't most of New Jersey considered suburb of either NYC or Philly?
Isn't most of Connecticut considered suburb of NYC? And so forth.
Baton Rouge and New Orleans are about an hour apart in the car, depending on traffic, but neither are suburbs of the other.
But, Mandeville is also about an hour from New Orleans. (ETA: Maybe not quite an hour - but Hammond is definitely an hour or more - and same thing).
Your way is kind of subjective and my way is kind of objective, so that's what I was trying to get to.

Absolutely
I can see some incredible things and never leave the city limits. The town itself is over 3,200 sq. Miles, has over 35 glaciers, couple of mountain ranges, coast, islands. I'd be perfectly content.

Pretty much this.
Here's the thing, you all are trying to find loopholes for how you can travel around at least somewhat. The options here are pretty simple-you get a billion in cash or you don't ever get to travel anywhere, ever. I can see that some of you are not cut out for it.
If you live in BR you do not get New Orleans. The farthest place you will travel will be in your limo to Tony's seafood on plank road.
No one on this board lives in Connecticut so these hypotheticals are not relevant and need not be addressed. And you don't get to choose where to live, it's the city you live in.

Does Grand Isle count for New Orleans? It is in Jefferson Parish.
Does the Northshore? Hammond? Laplace?
If stuff like Grand Isle and the North Shore counted I could definitely make it work. At least gives you a little wiggle room and a slightly more diverse things to do.
Otherwise it would be hard, but yes I could do it, especially if my wife could travel at will and the money is separate property and not community.
