But does it hold regardless of geography? For instance, choosing to be heavily tattooed in the Bay Area is vastly different than rural Louisiana. Those who make those choices in areas with no possible career option would obviously be mentally different than those who make that choice in Austin, SF, NYC etc.

The only ones I question is face, neck and knuckle tats. Just seems like terrible decision making to me

I work in a professional setting and when I wear a suit and tie, you wouldn't know I have a tattoo.

Just because I like tattoos and have some doesn't mean I'm blind to how some view them. You have to be realistic, and mine are about personal meaning, not maximum viewing.

Tattoos are an outward reflection of something going on inside a person.
If the tattoo is really important, then a person should have it carved on wood and varnished really well to preserve it, then it can be passed down to other family members when the person passes away. It does not need to be on the body which can not be preserved.
If it is not that important, then it should not be tatted on one's body.

I think this is where you'll really find a correlation with mental stability, especially on the face and neck. I might have been a bit compulsive at one point but I've never done one that can't be easily hidden.

I have no desire to pass them down. They're for me, and me alone.

I just want my wife to have me stuffed and mounted in the living room anyways, so mine will work for both purposes.

When i was a kid, if you had a tattoo you were a shifty shady sorta guy and there was no fashion statement in it at all. But nowadays, every fratboy with bama bangs and uptown hipster slut has a tattoo.

If you want to be a nonconformist, don't get a tattoo.

Anyway, no matter how bright and shiny they look when you first get one, in no time at all they end up looking like green, yellow and black fungal infections.

Oh and they're disgusting on women.

I don't agree. I used to, but not anymore. What is your thing in life? What do you love to do?

I’m old enough to remember when only sailors, bikers, and convicts got tats.

No females of repute.

Now I don’t much care, I’m kinda happy that none of the little Füts or their SOs have them but whatever.

I get that the rules are different today than in 1980.

Personally I’m not an aficionado of them on wimminz.

OP: I think there might be a correlation between impulse control and tats.

It is already been pointed out that having a large net worth does not mean you don't have a mental instability of some type.

There was a time a tattoo meant you were an outsider or a nonconformist. Maybe you sailed to exotic ports of call. Maybe you did a little time or whatever.

Now it just means you're into fashion and you're sorta like everyone else.

Meh. It's not a monolithic group. A lot of people with easily displayed tattoos are probably doing it for fashion, I'll give you that.

Sure but I’m sure you’ll agree there’s a direct correlation between high status career/net worth and mental stability. How do they fit into this discussion?

People who never leave the deep south don’t have the life experience to know that there are plenty of people out there like I’m describing.

What's funny is the vast majority of people on here have tatoos (their avatar pic). It's just not permanent. But yet they are expressing themselves in the same way that people with permanent tatoos are. Funny. I have no tatoos, FWIW, just my observation.
