We have a friend in Alabama who has had bladder cancer for several years. The VA he goes to has tried a different protocol on him and he's still alive several years after his "sell by" date. He says the treatments are unpleasant, but the cancer hasn't spread to other organs and is under control and shrinking.

I'm sure it can be good. I'm lucky enough to have private insurance also. If I get cancer I think I would drive to MD Anderson. Not the VA.

He's one of the lucky ones.

My mom is a bladder cancer survivor. In remission.

In the posted link, was someone supposed to go to his car and retrieve his gun out of the glovebox? No one's doing that at any hospital . Biggest fault you could say is that maybe the hospital/psychiatrist should have PEC the guy for 24 hours while being evaluated to see how intentful his threats were...but he wrote the story and didn't follow through, so maybe the pyschiatrist was right in his eval to discharge the guy.

In any case, VA treatment is definitely hit or miss. There are good hospitals and poor hospitals. Even the good hospitals are fairly outdated. With that said, at many of the major VA hospitals/regional VISNs etc. the physician staff in many cases are the same crew from the university/academic hospitals.

Right. In Nola it's usually a Tulane resident.

Fights to uphold our Constitution.

Doesn't appreciate the state-run institution not violating his Constitutional freedoms to keep a gun in his personal vehicle.

That's some fricked up shite. And I feel for our Vets, but frick him.

This should be a warning to everyone clamoring for universal, single payer, government run health care in this country.

They act like we will all get the Mayo Clinic, but what we will really get is the VA. And it will be exactly like what this vet describes.

Agreed. It’s such a waste of resources. But it’s not going anywhere because they have nothing to do with the current infrastructure and employees.

I've heard stories like that and I know people with your opinion, but I have also been a first-hand observer to some top notch care from the VA. It involved a liver transplant, all the care leading up to it, and all the care in the several years since. We have only had minimal complaints that are comparable to pretty much any other hospital.

I will say, though, that the VA blows my mind in the wide differences (reported) in care. I don't know how to square that with what I have witnessed and seen with my own eyes.

All those gubt services that are so hard to find are simply political slush funds.

what do you think it takes to improve the VA?

The VA is a broken system. There is no fixing it. To many untouchable bureaucrats running it for any real change to happen.

Like someone said. Shout it down and give Vets good insurance plans and let them choose where they go.

Around here they often charge the vets who have guns in their car on VA property. This guy would have probably posted a rant on Twitter if they had retrieved his gun from his unlocked car and rung him up for the typical $500 to $1,000 fine plus forfeiture of his pistol. They didn’t, so he rants about that.

I help my handyman negotiate the VA redtape and they have helped him get through a few health issues. He is currently going through cataracts treatment and so far, so good. Without the VA, he would not be getting any treatment as he can't afford health insurance. Like you, he is distrustful of them but he has come around to appreciating them the last few years.

GEOTUS was making headway with the VA Health systems. Leftist are taking over the reigns there as well.

He got lucky. Normal protocol is 800mg motrin and hope that you don't come back. The new treatment is mental health so they can tell you that you only think that you have your issue.
