Look, arsehole, I'm not here for the play-by-play. I'm here for the color commentary.

Pioneer, do you have a word document of all of these saved?
Ill post the links later.
Tried to find the post where someone's parents came over for Thanksgiving but wouldn't come in the house because of the virus. They ate outside in the backyard by themselves while everybody else ate inside.

Must be a pretty serious illness to miss Thanksgiving.

I am in the same boat. 2 throwing their guts up sick this morning. Was supposed to head to La. Tomorrow for family Thanksgiving but now it's a no go. And we have nothing here to cook because hadn't planned on having to.

That shite has been going around everywhere right now it seems.
My daughter had it last week, I got it the next day, my parents got it a couple days after, FIL got it early this week.
Miserable experience.

This is me also. I really can't remember any drama at my family's Thanksgiving dinners throughout my entire lifetime. Like you said, we eat, clean up, hang out awhile and go home. I guess we're just boring
Same here. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that my family (and my wife's family) all see each other regularly. Not just on holidays.

This is the fricking way. We live 45 mins away from her parents so we see them for every fricking holiday. I swear her mom will try to have us for lunch on Arbor day. Christmas Day is my one hill...we don't go there, they don't come here......that holiday will be for our household only...at least that one
Yeah, I've loved it since we started doing this. It's taken my wife some time to come around because he festivities were always very traditional, but hse is excited this year.
What you mentioned is half the reason we are so hesitant to move anywhere close to back home. When we were down the road from my FIL every Sunday was some special lunch or some get together. I'm not faulting the man for wanting to see his family, however he did a 180 when we actually got there. Frantically running around, not paying attention to anyone, delegating cooking tasks, etc. As if the act of putting on the event was more important than the event itself.

Isn't that weird when you think about it? *Knock on wood* I haven't thrown up as an adult for anything that wasn't alcohol related (years ago, thankfully) or this summer when I took too many medications at the same time when I had Covid.
As a kid, it seems like we threw up like 3 times a year or something.

It annoys my wife I feel this way and she'll say things like...you don't like spending time with them. I do....but when we're done and it's time to go it's time to fricking go. The extra hour that her mom tries to add to each and every time we see them is infuriating.
You and I are a lot alike. My limit on family stuff is I guess lower than some people. Thing is, even if you genuinely like in-laws.. When it isn't your own close family, it sometimes feels like a performance. You have to behave as you would to a client or coworker or something.. overly polite, talkative, smile glued to your face, etc.
It isn't that you don't like them or anything. Can just be a lot when the whole day gets dedicated like that.
And I'm sure my SO feels the same way. My parents are laid back as hell and we are in Toledo Bend with them this Thanksgiving, but I'm sure there's a certain degree of "this isn't my close family" too for him.

Yes...this is it 100%. It's hard to explain to her because she will say...well just be yourself, you're overthinking it. I don't think she has a frame of reference cause I moved away and we see my family maybe twice a year so she doesn't get tired of it.
I really almost lost it this weekend. I got told on Saturday that we would be having lunch with them Sunday...she of course couldn't fathom why this annoyed me. So instead of watching the saints game, smoking a cigar on my patio like I planned...I spent over 2 frickin hours at an outback. They order appetizers when no one asks for them, take sweet time eating, then her dad has to order coffee, then see a dessert menu.
They are gonna want to take us out for lunch on my birthday and Imma be an a-hole if I don't want to...at this point I think Imma be ok with being an a-hole tho
