yea - i'd keep it up a bit more (like with kennel cough) if I took my dog to dog parks (I just hate dog parks). His outdoor time with me is on a hiking trail so not a ton of dog-dog interaction.

OP - Vaccines are a good idea. Rabies is required by law and it (and most of the others) can be administered every 3 years in most states. I tend to stop vaccinating my house dogs for anything but rabies after they've reached middle to older age. This is just my preference and not a recommendation. I keep up vaccines in hunting/sporting dogs b/c the exposure is much greater. I don't administer vaccines with what I do but I don't think vets make much money off them at all.

Any dog in the south should be on heartworm preventative throughout the year - not doing so is asking for trouble.

I can't believe you took that seriously. The sidepiece was a dead give away. I don't even own a dog by the way so I really don't care. If I did I would get my dog checked though. Dogs are pretty awesome

Is their a vaccine for heartworm, or is it something you must give monthly?

I promise I'm not as pet dumb as this makes me sound
Monthly.

If you do anything do this. To answer your original question we've never kept up with the annual stuff until we tried to board them or whatever then they got you by the balls. The heartworm is real deal and for the health of your pet make sure you do this religiously.

She has pits, so we have zero dog to dog interaction. No dog parks, no boarding. Only outside time they have is to use the bathroom and one dog goes on short walks, the other is too old to move around for any extended period of time.

I'm fairly certain the oldest does not get heart worm preventative anymore. She had some health issues about a year ago so I'm not entirely sure, I would have to ask her.

Unless the price of these have gone way up over the years, vaccines cost them very little.

We used to joke in the hospital how we charged $30 for a vaccine and we bought them for $1

Definitely going to start the heartworm again immediately
Take her to the vet BEFORE you start heartworm meds. If she already has them the meds can kill her (from what I understand). You would need to treat differently if they're already there.

Did you not read my post?

I said unless the prices have changed since I worked there, they were very cheap.

If I'm wrong, just correct me.

That's honestly probably the best way to get a pit to bite.. No socialization at all? You gotta socialize them early and often. Socialize them to people, to dogs, cats, and every animal.

Where did you get that kennel

Amazon. Although Walmart.com and many other retailers have it too.

Lucky Dog Kennell is the brand. They have many different size configurations. Mine is 8x4. You can take out panels to make it 4 x 4 if needed. They also have a vinyl roof top.

Sorry to hear about your FIL's dog. We went back and forth on if we should do treatment or not due to fatality risk. Keeping a young lab calm for 8 weeks is a tall order.

Unless you take your dog to the park or board him, there isn't a serious need to vaccinate.

If he comes in contact with strange dogs on a regular basis, get him vaccinated.

Flea and tick treatment is also unnecessary if you have treated your yard.

Yes we definitely differ.

I watched a family member lose a beloved dog for missing the treatments for a much shorter period of time. It was awful and she still has trouble with the guilt, but do what you want.

The heartworm business is nothing to sneeze at. That was my point. Too risky with where you live and where you take your dog. It's just not worth it. I hope you can find a way soon to get your dog to the vet. Mine is open on Saturday mornings, but I also bring the kitties in the morning and leave them for the day, as well, for checkups. She doesn't charge me extra for that, but that woman gives too much for free to people. Sometimes, wonder how she makes money.

Quit taking our pets to the vet. It's a scam.

Surprised at all the idiots who downvoted this. Once vaccinated for rabies they do not need it again. Yet they push you to have one every year. Such a scam.

But if they get out of your yard and have worms or fleas you could be charged with a felony. So take care of them and better keep good records of shots.

My vet gets a 3 year rabies vaccine so I don't have to get one every year. You do have to register for a tag every year. If your dog gets out and bites another dog or a person, you're going to be in some deep water without a current rabies.

Interesting. I've spoken with several people recently who have never vaccinated their dogs and their animals lived long, happy lives
Seems like millions of years worth of evolution support this. Unless one believes that vaccines would of saved the dinosaurs
